Congratulations to the Shaw Baseball team for reaching the Finals in the State Championship as AAA State Runner-Ups! 

May
CLUBS
Winners of the Third Annual Shaw Chess Club Mini-tournament were as follows: Ike Means, First Place; Corey Bentsen, Second Place; Bobby Means, Third Place; and Demetrius McCrory, Fourth Place.

FINE ARTS
Shaw's choruses--Mixed Chorus, Show Choir, and Gospel Choir-- received ALL Superior Ratings at the Showcase Festival in Atlanta the weekend of the 14th.  Additionally, Mixed Chorus and Show Choir won a first place trophy each, and Gospel Choir won a second place trophy. Robin Bellamy won the musicianship trophy as best student director; Jeff Edwards won best accompanist, and Jarrett Hugley won best soloist!

HONORS
Richelle Gonzalez, graduate of SHS, was one of ten students in the nation who was selected to attend an all expenses paid enVision Minority Photojournalism Workshop at Western Kentucky University this summer.  She also won the Georgia Press Association Scholarship.

MCSD'S OUTSTANDING 1ST YEAR TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Our own Mrs. Lane Tyus won this very distinctive award!  Mrs. Tyus who teaches freshman English and Speech also did her student teaching last spring with Mr. Mike Stephens.  Mr. Stephens, Department Chair said, "During my entire 30 year teaching career, never have I encountered a first-year teacher as knowledgeable, creative, and resourceful as Lane Tyus." Mrs. Tyus graduated in 2001 from Harris County High School and was in the Top Five of her graduating class.  She graduated from Columbus State University in three years, received the Secondary Education Award from CSU, and is working on her Masters.

Mrs. Sheree Tovey is our Spano Teacher of the Year.  She teaches Criminal Justice.

Retirees
After 30 years as an educator and having taught at Shaw for 25 years, Ms. Kathy Tracy is retiring.  She has taught World History, U.S. History, Citizenship, Economics, Advanced Government, Sociology, Psychology, American Origins, and Career Education.

Moves
Mr. Chris Lindsey who has been at Shaw for seven years is headed to Carver High School as the new Principal. Before coming to Shaw as Assistant Principal in charge of discipline, Mr. Lindsey taught Business Education and Marketing at Columbus High.

HONORS NIGHT
On May 3, many of Shaw students were honored with various awards, academic letters, and scholarships.  Of those honors and awards, the Top Ten students of each class were honored.  Ashley Perry was inadvertently omitted from the Top Ten list at Honors.  The corrected Top Ten students for each grade level is listed below.

The Top Ten students from the senior class are Joanne Boggs, Blake Bourne, Brandon Cummings, Monica Diaz, Antonio Hamilton, Derek Johnson, Shawn Jones, Dexter Mills, Mercedes Parham, and Anthony Threatts.

The Top Ten students from the junior class are Tiffany Hunter, Carrie Jones, Jonathan Lapp, Taneshia McFadden, Samantha Nieves, Andre Reese, Ashley Roelkey, Jessie Scott, Hardeep Singh, and Keshia White. 

The Top Ten students from the sophomore class are Chandler Anderson, Joshua Bailey-Ankebrant, Jamie Bankston, Husam Hafidh, Erin Henderson, Aaron Kang, Haley Lyman, Ashley Perry, Glenna Schubert, Jessica Scott, and Eric Switzer.

The Top Ten students from the freshmen class are Daniel Best, Tabitha Bradford, Brittany Campbell, Janice Cerri, Nancy Eldridge, Whitney Horton, Jeffrey Nieves, Daphne Smith, Stephanie Thompson, and Alice Webb.

ATHLETICS
The boys' track team finished in first place in the region track meet in LaGrange May 2.  Individual members qualifying for the state meet are Lartareo Shaw (shot put, discus, and high jump); Walter McKee (100m dash and 200m dash); Anthony Threatts (400m dash); Quincy Rojas (400 dash); Anthony Threatts, Walter McKee, Quincy Rojas, and Sean Carter (400m relay); and Quincy Rojas, Sean Carter, Christopher Kyles, and Anthony Threatts (1600m relay).

Brittany McCall was chosen to be on the 2005-2006 Columbus State University Cheerleading Squad.

CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT
Shaw seniors Luke Jackson and Rene Garcia's pictures were in the Ledger-Enquirer April 20.  They were cutting wood to make a wheelchair ramp for the home of Essie Boggs, a Columbus resident.  They and two other students from Mr. Bob Yarbrough's woodshop class volunteered their time to Boggs who is a participant in the Community Care Services Program.

FACULTY/STAFF HONORS
Peggy White. department head of Shaw's Special Education department,  received the "Teachers Partnering in Education Award" from Columbus State University for here participation in the CSU teacher education program.

Drae Hurston-White who works in the Special Education Department at Shaw and is also the Color Guard Instructor for the SHS band played the part of the Scarecrow in "The Wiz" at the Liberty Theatre May 13, 14, 20, and 21  at 8 p.m. and May 15 and 22 at 3 p.m. "The Wiz" is based on L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz.

Lane Tyus was chosen by the Shaw Curriculum Council to be Shaw's nominee for the MCSD First Year Teacher Award.

Phil Linn is Shaw High School's Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Teacher Nominee for 2005. Mr. Linn has been teaching at Shaw for twelve years.

GOVERNORS HONOR'S PROGRAM

Congratulations to Carlton Dawson for being selected to participate in the 2005 Governors Honor's Program.  The Governors Honor's program (GHP) is a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students, challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the school year.  Carlton will participate in activities designed to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable him to become a lifelong independent learner.

LAWS OF LIFE AWARD
Jenna Smithart was honored at the Laws of Life banquet in Atlanta April 25.  Her essay was selected as one of only 37 finalists from over 19,000 entered in the Laws of Life essay contest.  Jenna received her plaque and a check for $100 for being selected as a finalist.

In addition to Jenna's award, grade winners from Shaw were Darien Floyd, Nick Knapp, and Bremann Bates.  Noniska Anglin, Kristina Shifflett, and Belinda Watts received honorable mention.

MEDIA FESTIVAL
Dana Palmer received a perfect score on his multi-media project entitled "Dejeurner Du Matin" in the MCSD Student Media Festival and went on to win at the 2005 State Student Media Festival.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
The week of April 18 is PIE Week. TSYS won a Gold Award for its work at Shaw!

PHASE II: LEARN & SERVE PROJECT: THE KOREAN WAR CELEBRATION SHOW
The celebration show was April 20 in the Shaw Auditorium with a reception following in the Shaw Media Center.  The celebration is entitled "Letters Home: A Chronicle of the Korean War."  The prologue and epilogue were written by the U.S. history class, the letters by the creative writing class, songs were provided by the choral department, actors from drama, creative writing, and music appreciation classes, and set pieces were built by the construction department and painted by the art department.  This was truly a cooperative effort that involved approximately 100 students and the hard work of many dedicated teachers.  It was an emotional and thought-provoking show that chronicled the hardships of war--combat, leaving loved ones and family behind, and the inevitable consequences of casualties and death--and how duty to country and hope for the future are important.

Over 100 invited guests--veterans and their families, school board members, administration from MCSD, and officials from the Georgia Learn & Serve grant board were in attendance, along with Shaw students from numerous classes.

2005 PROM
Anthony Threatts and Tina Scalcucci were selected as the King and Queen of the Junior/Senior Prom held Saturday, March 26.

ADAPTIVE BASKETBALL
Congratulations to Jonathan Byrd for his participation in the Muscogee Lions Adaptive basketball team; he led his team to a state championship win.

ATHLETICS
All-Bi-City Basketall Team
Patrick Powell was honored as a member of the All-Bi-City Basketball team.  Treasure Johnson made the Girls' Second Team, and Taneisha McFadden, Kyndal Schaff, and Kanisha Oxford received Honorable Mention.
All-Bi-City-Wrestling Team
Blake Bourne, Carson Grimsley, and Matt Loyed were honored as members of the All-B-City Wrestling team.  Daquinn Cheek made the Second Team.

BAND
Through a series of auditions, sophomore Forrest R. Parker was selected to participate in the 2005 All State Concert Band March 3-5.  Forrest spent the weekend in Savannah, rehearsing at the Lucas Theater with 110 ninth ant tenth graders for a final concert on Saturday.  He was one of six tuba performers to be selected from the audition process.

FACULTY/STAFF HONORS
Dr. Debbie Ball was inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame March 19, 2005.  She is only the second woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  She has coached high school sports at Shaw for the last 27 years.

Shirley Cook was named Georgia's 2005 FCCLA Master Advisor.   This program recognizes FCCLA advisors who have been successful in advising an affiliated chapter for a minimum of three years (Mrs. Cook has been such for seven years); promoting the organization; operating a co-curricular chapter with a balanced program of work; facilitating youth-centered activities; and keeping abreast of new happenings within the organization. She will be recognized at the National Leadership Meeting in California in July 2005. Mrs. Cook has been at Shaw for seven years.

Judy King, secretary at Shaw High School,  was recognized as the ABCD (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty) award winner for March at the March MCSD Board Meeting.  Mrs. King has been at Shaw since 1992. 

GEORGIA MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION DISTRICT III
On March 18, our Fine Arts Department competed at the GMEA District III Festival.  The band performed three selections, "Children of the Shrine" by James Swearingen, "Ghost Fleet" by Robert Sheldon, and "Lament and Tribal Dance" by Michael Sweeney, for a panel of three judges selected from around the Southeast. The final performance rating was a Superior with all judges awarding the band a Superior.  In Sight Reading, the band also received a Superior rating.  Student conductor, Taaquiya Brown, received a Superior Plus rating for her performance conducting the band.

Also, receiving Superior ratings at the Festival were Chorus Level I, Chorus Level III, and Orchestra Level IV-V.

MATH TOURNAMENT
At the 9th Annual Math Tournament held at Bainbridge College Friday, March 25, Shaw's Math Team took second place in the 3-A competition, and Joanne Boggs took second place in Individual.  Team participants were Cody Anderson, Joanne Boggs, Ki Yong Chong, Brandon Cummings, Andrew Gosselin, Shawn Jones, Aaron Kang, and Mercedes Parham.  Cheerleaders for the competition from Shaw were Jazzmin Bryant and Juan PIuckett.
