Shaw
students returned from an exciting trip to London, England! Cameron
Baskin, Elizabeth Helmer, Charles McIlrath, and William Chapman, along with
their sponsors, Shaw social studies teacher Lynda Kannady and her husband David,
spent eight days on tour of London to Oxford, Stonehenge, Bath, and Stratford. The group was able to see many historic and memorable sites, as well as tasting
a wide variety of different foods, enjoying the theatre, and experiencing
shopping in London. The trip was such a success that Mrs. Kannady and Mrs.
Brantley Ford, also a social studies teacher at Shaw, are planning a trip for
May 2007 to the historic East Coast cities of New York, Philadelphia, and
Washington, D.C. The trip is open to students, alumni, faculty, and
friends of Shaw. If you are interested in joining in on the adventure,
please email Mrs. Kannady at
lkannady@mcsdga.net or Mrs. Ford at
aford@mcsdga.net or call Shaw High School at 706-569-3638.

FEATURED
Two of Shaw's own were
featured in Allison Kennedy's article, "The Lost Art of Snail Mail," in
the Sunday, April 30 edition of the Ledger-Enquirer. Brittany
Bellamy, a Shaw senior, who plans to major in political science and then go into
law says that she prefers the hand-written letter for, "Letter writing is more
personal and secure. With e-mail you could accidentally send it to someone
else; and a letter is in your own penmanship." Miriam Whitten, a Spanish
teacher at Shaw, writes letters twice a year, one at Christmas and one during
the summer, to about 100 people to catch them up on what is going on in her
family's lives. She stated, "I started writing them in the summer too
because if you wait a year, so much happens."

Chelsie Plunkett
is featured in the Local & Business section of April 12 issue
of the Ledger-Enquirer. Click here to see how
she was honored in March. In her application, she wrote," Before October
2004, I believed as long as you're not the one doing the drugs, then it doesn't
matter. But reality is, to be truly drug-free and receive the benefits of
being drug-free, all aspects of your life must remain drug-free -- even friends. Drug-free means that you not only stay from drugs but set an example that will
influence others to be drug-free." Chelsie is involved in Distributive
Education Clubs of America (she took second-place in the state for business
speech), the school's newspaper, senior council, drama club, and soccer team
(captain). She is also a volunteer youth and church soccer coach and
mentors Fox Elementary students working on their school's newspaper. Ron Hinze, the chamber's senior vice president for small business development,
oversees the Drugs Don't Work program. He said selecting the Kees' award
winner is tough but enjoyable task for the committee. He said, "These
kids are phenomenal. When you read their applications, it just makes you
feel so good about our future."
Chelsie stood out as someone whose life was so adversely affected by
substance abuse, just be associating with it, but she overcame that label
because of her positive behavior." Additionally, classmate and editor of
the school newspaper, Erin Henderson wrote in her recommendation for Chelsie
that she "is an example of someone who has fun and finds joy in life without the
assistance of drugs. She has truly turned a lemon into lemonade." Chelsie has earned an academic scholarship to Andrew College in Cuthbert,
Georgia. She wants to study political science and then attend law school
to give her more skills to help troubled youth. Need we say more? We
are so proud to have Chelsie here at Shaw!
PROGRAMS
Honors Night was held Monday, April 24 at 6:30pm in the Shaw Auditorium; a
reception followed in the Commons.
Shaw students volunteered for the 15th Annual Drug Free You & Me Conference held
at the Trade Center for all sixth grade students in the MCSD system. The
students volunteered over a three day period from April 11-13. Each day
sixth graders from different middle schools were entertained by a Pisces Kiss, a
band from Atlanta, and were inspired by Janice Johnson and Dan Davis,
international motivational speakers. Their message was for students to
make right choices concerning drugs and alcohol and not be persuaded by peer
pressure and wanting to belong to a group influence them. Additionally, Shaw
students received a honor by having Dan Davis, former college and NFL player
speak to them April 12. Dan shared the devastation of drug usage and
addiction in his own life. As a result of his usage, he contracted
Hepatitis C and is now on the list for a liver transplant. He comments,
"When you use drugs, you pay now, or you pay later."

PHYSICS/MATHEMATICS HONORS
Congratulations to Shaw's first robotics team for placing second in
the First FVC competition held Thursday, March 16 in Duluth Georgia. This
inaugural team impressed the judges as well as other veteran teams for their
outstanding work as a first year team. Robot design and engineering as
well as website design were competitive with the other teams. Alliances,
which are crucial in competition, were forged early with the top teams. Shaw's alliance proved that strategy as well as bot design was crucial in
success during the competition, and the alliance (three bot teams) worked
together in placing second in the regionals. The final score between first
and second alliances was close. Judges remarked that this was the best
finals that they had seen in any regional competition. The next stop for
Shaw's Robotic Team---National Robotics Competition at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta April 27-29
where 256 teams are expected to compete! That's Shawsome!! Shaw's
Robotic Team was featured in the March 31 edition of the Ledger-Enquirer. The article stated that about 50 teams started the March competition; however,
21 were eliminated because they did not meet the requirements.
PTSA
Our PTSA's "Adopt-a-Seat" campaign to raise funds to replace
Shaw's worn-out auditorium seats has raised one-third of the funds needed. We have now been assured that the MCSD will accept responsibility for completing
the project. All those who "adopted" a seat will have their engraved
plaques on their seats, and Shaw's PTSA is most grateful for the
generosity of its faculty, both past and present, alumni; students; parents; and
friends during this campaign. We are hopeful that the auditorium seats
will be replaced by the fall of 2006. Anyone with questions, please
contact Kathy Tracy at kt283@bellsouth.net
or at 706.573.2293.
