Absences
Excused
- Absences are excused only for personal illness, illness or death
in the immediate family, health or safety related factors, or special
permission received in advance by the Principal. Students returning to school from an absence are to bring
in a written note signed by their parent or guardian to their first (1st) block
teacher stating the day or days of absence along with the date the note is
written. Students have three (3) days after returning from an absence to
submit their note for that absence. After three (3) days, the absence is
unexcused, and students will receive a zero (0)for work missed. Students with
absences lasting more than three (3) days should have a physician's note upon return
in order for the absences to be excused.
-
Parents or guardians of
students with excessive excused or five (5) unexcused absences will be referred to
the MCSD truancy officer for violation of Georgia compulsory education laws. Possible consequences to the parent or guardian include fines, imprisonment,
and/or community service.
- Students absent ten (10) consecutive days (unless otherwise stated in Georgia law) will be referred to
the Georgia driver's license bureau for non-compliance and that student's
license will be suspended for the specified period of time.
- Long-term absences due
to illness or injury may qualify a student for homebound instruction. Parents should contact the school for information about this service.
- It is the student's
responsibility to make up all work missed as a result of an excused absence.
- In order to participate
in an extracurricular activity, students must be in attendance for the full day
on the day of the event.
Unexcused
-
Students who have
unexcused absences will receive a grade of zero (0) in all subjects for each day
absent and may not be permitted to do make-up work for credit. Suspensions
are considered unexcused.
- Absences due to family vacations are unexcused.
Automated Calling
Shaw High School uses
an automated calling system to notify parents of a student's absence.
Parents are welcome to call the school at any time to check on their child's
attendance if more information is needed.
Re-Entry after
Suspension
The Assistant Principal
must reinstate all students returning from suspension or in-school suspension
before returning to class. Students who return from suspension must bring
a parent or guardian for a conference unless otherwise excused by the Assistant
Principal.
