ATHLETICS
Basketball
Congratulations to Demarcus McCrory and Treasure Johnson for being selected to the All-Bi-City Basketball Teams' Boys' First Team and Girls' First Team respectively. The Ledger-Enquirer commented that Demarcus was the Raiders' best outside shooter, was capable of scoring points in a hurry, shot 56 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3-point range, and averaged 15.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Treasure was described as an athletic 6-foot-1 forward, had signed with North Carolina-Wilmington, and averaged 20.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 3.1 assists this season. Patrick Powell was selected to the Second Team, while Maliek Daniels, Antonio Davison, and Kyndal Schaaf received Honorable Mention. We're proud of all of you!

Track
At the April 10 track meet, Shaw's girls and boys both placed first overall! Great job Raiders!!

The Girl's Track Team placed second April 29 at the Region Meet. Shaw's polevault record was broken twice at the meet, first by Brittany Shackelford with a six foot vault and later by Markeisha Williamson with the new high school record of six feet six inches. Other outstanding performances by Misha Aldridge in the discus event and Melania Takemoto in the one mile were impressive. Congratulations Lady Raiders!

The Shaw girls' track team captured another region title on April 21 scoring 127 points. The following athletes will represent Shaw at the State Track Meet in Albany on May 4: Treasure Johnson region runner-up in High Jump; Markeisha Williamson region champion in Pole Vault; Meisha Aldridge region champion in Discus; Patricia Blair region runner-up in Triple Jump and 100m Hurdles; Melanie Takemoto region champion in the 1600 meters and 800 meters; the girls 4x400 meter Relay Team of Patricia Blair, Charquisa Burnley, Deziree Murphy, and Nakela Jackson. Region champion in the 100 and 300 meter Hurdles was Nakela Jackson. It was a great team performance by the Lady Raiders' whole track team. Best of luck at State!

At the Boy's Region Track Meet Thursday, May 26, Shaw placed second with only 38 points behind LaGrange placing first with 57 points. Reid Lynch  placed third in the Pole Vault, while Juan Pickett placed first in the Shot Put. Demetrius Jackson, Anton Graphenreed, Sean Carter, and Roger Chaney placed first in the 4x100 Meter Relay. Stephen Waynick placed second in the 1600 Meter Run, and Anton Graphenreed placed first in the 400 Meter Dash. Aaron Whitaker placed second in the 110 Meter Hurdles. Anton Graphenreed placed third in the 200 Meter Dash. Aaron Whitaker placed third in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Shaw's A team for the 4x400 placed second. Great job Raiders and good luck Saturday!

"Shaw boys win track title!" stated the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in their April 29, 2007, edition. The Ledger went on to state, "Shaw won the Region 3-AAA boys track title with 108 points on Saturday. LaGrange was second with 86, and Kendrick was third with 66. Shaw's Anton Graphenreed won three individual titles, including both relays and the 400 Meter Run. Graphenreed teamed up with Demetrius Jackson, Sean Carter, and Roger Chaney to win the 4x400 Relay. Graphenreed, Carter, Chaney, and Aaron Whitaker combined to win the 4x400 Relay. Whitaker also won the 110 Hurdles... The top two finishers in each event qualified for the GHSA state track meet in Jefferson May 10-12." Congratulations Boys' Track Team on your impressive win and performance. You make us proud! Best of luck to you also at State!

CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS
Chess Club
Bo Love won first place at the annual Shaw Chess Club Mini-tournament Wednesday, April 25, in the Shaw Media Center. Corey Bentsen won second place, and Brian Johnson won third place.  Congratulations chess club members!!

FCCLA
Tara Brown was elected as a state officer for FCCLA in the office of Secretary/Treasurer for 2007-2008 and will attend the FCCLA National Conference in Anaheim, California July 8-12. Also, Candace Hill earned a gold medal in her Chapter Service Project and was second in state competition. Catherine Wade completed the year at the state FCCLS Secretary/Treasurer. Great work girls and FCCLA!

SkillsUSA
A big congratulations to our RNN anchors, Gerald Charleston and Chantelle Quintana and technical director Jeremy Miles for winning first place at the SkillsUSA Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. They qualify to represent Georgia at the National SkillsUSA in Kansas in June. Also, a big congratulations to Josh Bailey who took third place in Cabinet Making in Atlanta.

COLLEGE/CAREER FAIR
The fifth annual Partners in Education "College and Career Fair" was held in the Shaw Media Center the morning of April 19. Fifteen representatives from area colleges, the military, and local businesses presented information to 24 classes. TSYS and Mediacom of Columbus, Shaw's  Partners in Education, hosted the event with classes rotating throughout the Media Center every twenty-five minutes. Mrs. Faith Pohl and Mrs. Nancy Grantham are the liaisons for TSYS and Mediacom respectively.

FINE ARTS
Band
Congratulations to Daniel Best, Jerel Brown, Jeff Edwards, Jessica Elmore, Kourtney Holland, and Mike McCoy on their OUTSTANDING participation in the 2007 Alabama State University Honor Band!  Jerel, Jeff, and Jessica were also offered scholarships to ASU for the 2007 school term--only six scholarships were given at this event, three going to the Raiders.

Another congratulations to the band in David Hunter's being selected as our 2006-2007 Drum Major! Great going David!

HONORS
2007 Shaw Prom
Chandler Anderson and Kayla Whitaker were named Shaw's 2007 Prom King and Queen Friday, April 13 at the Columbus Trade Center. The theme of the prom was "Parisian Romance." Congratulations Chandler and Kayla!!

Governor's Honors
Congratulations to Nathaniel Thomas who has made Governor's Honors for Chorus. He will be going to Valdosta State University for six weeks this summer!  Way to go Nathaniel!

JROTC
The following cadets were selected for Superior Cadet for the 2006-2007 school year based on their outstanding performance in JROTC and capable leadership: Let. 1 James Bradley, Let. 2 Jake Campbell,
Let. 3 Lance Ingram, and Let. 4 Algernon Horton. They have possessed integrity and have given selfless service to Shaw's JROTC program.  Outstanding job!

Journalism
Congratulations to the staff and advisor, Mrs. Mona Griffin, of our school newspaper, The Silver Star, who received a rating of excellent from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association at UGA on April 27 and also the Community Service Award (second year to receive the award) for the state. Kayla Whitaker, co-editor of The Silver Star, received a superior rating for her indepth news story "How Sweet It Is" about our Mighty Raider football team's win over Carver in the Georgia Dome. Mrs. Sonya Boyd, assistant editor, also received an appreciation award for her service to GSPA. Y'all are Shawsome!

Scholar Athletes
Chandler Anderson and Portia Norris were honored at the 2007 High School Scholar Athlete Banquet held April 17; student athlete representatives from all area high schools also attended. Additionally, Portia was recognized the Columbus Regional female Above and Beyond Award Scholar Athlete recipient. Portia also received a $500.00 savings bond from Synovus Trust Company, N.A. They also were both chosen as Wendy's Heismen Award Winners. You both make us proud! 
 

Substitute Teachers
Congratulations to our own Mr. Tommy Bassett, retired principal of MCSD, who won the 2007 St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital's Columbus Dream Home! Mr. Bassett substitutes exclusively at Shaw and is well respected by teachers, administrators, and students alike. We are so proud and happy for you!  And why do we love him so much?  He says and believes, "The students at Shaw are great, and I really enjoy working with them. The faculty and staff are true professionals and do an outstanding job educating the boys and girls are Shaw--they care about the kids, and that's what education is all about."

Vocational
Freshman, Candace Hill won first place in the region FCCLA competition in Warner-Robbins for her "Chapter Service Project Manual." Her project was on Shaw High School's Annual Food Drive for the Salvation Army. Candace will be competing at the state level on April 18, 2007, in Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations Candace!

HONORS NIGHT
April 24 is Honors night at 6:30 in the Shaw auditorium. In addition to Shaw students being honored, our newly renovated auditorium and auditorium seats will be dedicated at this time. We wish to extend to all those who "adopted" a seat a warm thank you. It is due to their donations that our Adopt-a-Seat Campaign was made possible! 

HONORS (TEACHERS)
Congratulations to Dr. Pamela Graybill Anders who received her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Leadership!  We now have two Dr. Anders!!

JROTC
Shaw's JROTC will hold their first Annual Car Show Saturday, April 28, 2007, in the parking lot of Shaw High School (Rain Day, if necessary will be Mary 5, 2007. Registration is from 8AM to 10AM, and winners will be announced at 4PM. What classes of cars can be entered? Classics, Antiques, Customs, Street Rods, Stock Custom, and Built Motorcycles. Specialist awards will be given for "People's Choice," "Best in Show," "Oldest Car," Oldest Truck," "Best Paint," "Best Engine," and "Best Interior." Pre-registration fee is $15 and is non-refundable. The deadline for early/pre-registration is March 30. Late registration is $20. For an application or more information, call 1st SGT Jakes at (706) 569-3638. The event is being sponsored by Car Quest, CB&T, and Best Pawn.

LEARN AND SERVE
On Thursday, April 26, the Shaw High School Learn and Serve Program observed "Celebrate Columbus," a look at the people and events that shaped the Fountain City and helped make it an exciting place to live. Click here to find out more about this year's program.

OPEN HOUSE FOR INCOMING NINTH GRADERS
Open house will be May 1 at 6:30PM in the Shaw auditorium.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS
Fine Arts
The Spring Choral Concert will be Monday, April 30 at 7:00PM in the Shaw Auditorium. Come and enjoy the performance.

The Annual Shaw Art Show and Sale will be Tuesday, May 1, at 6:30PM in the Shaw Media Center.

Shaw's drama department will perform "Marcus is Walking" fourth block in the Shaw Auditorium.  Additionally, the drama department's spring production, Rock Around the Clock, will be May 11 and 12 at 7:00PM.  Admission is $5.00.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Bob Yarbrough, Shaw's April Teacher of the Month! Bob Yarbrough teaches construction, carpentry, and plumbing at Shaw.
