April 2008

ATHLETICS
Baseball
The Shaw Raider baseball team on Friday, April 18, against Kendrick wore "PINK" jerseys in recognition of the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's "Awareness for the Cure."
The Raiders sold pink shirts and baseball caps all week during the four lunch periods to raise money. Donations also were taken during the game, and the pink jerseys of all Shaw baseball players were sold with all the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The Komen Foundation is an organization that is dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer. Over $700 was raised! The Shaw baseball team presented a $500 check to Mrs. Kay Agnew and Mrs. Sonya Boyd, who symbolically represented all victims of breast cancer . Click here to see pictures of the game.

Basketball
Congratulations to Maliek Daniels and Rearkus McCrory for being selected as All-Bi-City Basketball Second Team, and to Khiry White and Misha Aldridge, Honorable Mention!

DISPLAYS
Come by the Shaw Media Center and see the '60s projects presently being displayed. Artwork, pictures of teachers and administrators taken in the 1960s, and various posters and triboards. Classes from across the curriculum researched different aspects of the 1960s and prepared their "product" to share with fellow classmates and teachers.  Classes involved in the project were Mrs. Lynda Kannady's history students, Mrs. Lynn Butler's art students, Mr. Vance Braman's speech students, Mrs. Christine Scott's ABC students, Mrs. Jacobson and Ms. Ruth Caton's economics students, Mrs. Sheree Tovey's public safety students, Mrs. Bridget Marshall and Mr. Kipp Patterson's RNN students. Also, participating with the project were Mr. and Mrs. Rick St. Clair, Mr. Jerry Boyd, Mrs. Sonya Boyd, Mrs. Rosie McDuffie, Ms. Anona Porterfield, and Mrs. Mona Griffin.

FINE ARTS
Band
The Shaw High School "Sounds of Silver" band recently traveled to Orlando, Florida, to participate in Walt Disney's Music Days Celebration, an event that Disney has produced for many years and which gives the opportunity for young performers to experience Disney Productions with an "up-close and personal" touch. This was such a serious event that the students are actually sworn in as "cast members." The SHS Sounds of Silver performed at Downtown Disney on the Dock Stage at 8:50 PM before a very large and energetic crowd. The band was awarded the Mickey Award for their performance; most bands are awarded this for an outstanding performance. What a wonderful honor!

Choral
Attention all lovers of great music! The Shaw chorus is having their spring concert at 7 PM on April 24 in the Shaw auditorium. Come for a night of of Shawsome music!

Foreign Language--Spanish
Charisma Grant, Jeneka Bennett, Shannon Marble, Kianca Taylor, and Tia Tolbert are among the students in the pictures below painting a geographical mural on the foreign language hallway. This magnificent work of art will not only decorate the walls, but it will inspire foreign language students and will instill a desire to learn and explore other countries' cultures. This on-going project should be completed by the end of fall ('08-09). This is a combined effort of the Spanish Club members and Mr. Pichardo's Spanish class. We invite every student as well as every member of the staff and faculty to visit the "International Gallery" on the Foreign Language Hallway.

The above named students have contributed greatly to this project; This project is possible only because of their hard work and dedication. They leave their mark on Shaw High School, not on sand but on cement...and will last forever.
