August 2006

ATHLETICS
Congratulations to Shaw football players Chandler Anderson, Bruce Figgins, and Arsenio Williams for being named by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer as three of their 2006 "Dandy Dozen."

Cam Greathouse, Howie Shackeford, Brandon Day, and John Hammock, Shaw baseball team members, competed in the Babe Ruth Southeast Regionals this summer in Richmond, Virginia.  They helped their Babe Ruth team win the Southeast Region with a record of 5-1, defeating Tennessee 6-4, Virginia 7-6, Alabama 5-0, North Carolina 10-0, and Alabama in the championship game 11-6.  Winning in the Southeast Tournament gave them a berth in the Babe Ruth World Series in Monticello, Arkansas.  In the first game in Arkansas, the only game Cam could play in due to other athletic responsibilities, he pitched a 2 hit shutout with nine strikeouts as his team went on to beat California 6-0.  The team went through pool play with a record of 4-0 defeating Arkansas 7-1, the host team from Arkansas 11-1, and Ohio 17-3, giving them a first place seed in the Semi-finals where they would play Ohio to see if they would advance to the Championship game.  However, they came a little short falling to Ohio 7-3.  Congratulations for advancing so far.  What a great honor and accomplishment!

A really BIG congratulations to the Columbus, Georgia (Northern) Little League team for winning the Little League World Series Championship against Japan, 2-1!  How outstanding can you get?!  World Champs!  Wow!!!  Click here to see their website.

We are very proud for every athlete on both teams.  You do us proud!

FINE ARTS
Nathaniel Thomas, a sophomore at Shaw High School, is playing Jimmy in the play "ReJalene," a full-fledged musical production written and directed by a another MCSD high school student at the Liberty Theater.
