August 2007

ALUMNI
Erin Henderson's ('07) valedictorian graduation speech, "A New Beginning: No Time for Regrets," was featured in the August 1, 2007, issue of Northland Neighbors. Her themes were "change" and "character"--"We can make a difference, not only in our future but in the world's as well. In the words of one of my favorite Switchfoot songs: 'This is your life. Are you who you want to be?' And if not, remember there's always room for change."

ATHLETICS
Shaw's own Cam Greathouse (#4), Juan Pickett (#76), and Bryan Willis (#20) were featured in the Ledger-Enquirer's Thursday, August 30 issue, as three members of the "Ledger-Enquirer's 2007 Dandy Dozen." Congratulations Raiders!!  Was there ever any doubt!

GENERAL
The theme for our football game this year with Carver High School was"Can Carver."  A canned food drive by the same name ran preceding the September 7 game from August 29 to September 6. Each First Block class competed with each other by bringing in canned goods to benefit Mission Columbus. The competition culminated with the winning class receiving special seating and recognition at the pep rally (Shaw vs Carver), special seating and recognition at Memorial Stadium by WTVM (Channel 9) at the game, other special surprises, and a satisfaction of helping those less fortunate. Brantley Ford's Honors Government class was the top winners!  Congratulations! In addition, Mission Columbus gave the winners a pizza party during their lunch.

HONORS
Dr. Jim Arnold, our principal, has been selected by Kathy Cox, the Georgia Superintendent of Education, to serve on the 2007-2008 Principal Advisory Council. The council is a group of about 40 principals from across the state of Georgia who discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting Georgia's schools. Members meet with State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox and are advisors who act as liaisons between the Department of Education and Georgia schools. Past topics discussed by the Principal Advisory Council include Best practices, improving AP opportunities, SAT scores, graduation rules, developing a leadership framework for the Professional Standards Commission, graduation rate, legislation, and graduation coaches. We are very proud of our principal being selected to serve on this elite committee! Congratulations, Dr. A!!

Mr. Edgar Johnson, track and field coach, was named by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association as the 2007 Region 2-AAA Boys' and Girls' Track and Field "Region Coach of the Year." Coach Johnson, you do us proud!!

Tara Brown, a sophomore, and Mrs. Shirley Cook, the Shaw FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Adviser, were among more than 5,000 students, advisors, alumni, and guests of FCCLA who gathered in Anaheim, California, to tackle various issues concerning youth, family, and communities at the 2007 National Leadership Meeting held July 6-13. This year's student-devised subject was "Leadership Revolution." Throughout the convention, participants examined and discussed several critical issues including family, school and community violence prevention, physical as well as financial fitness, future career exploration and countless community service projects. A number of relevant youth issues, such as changing roles of men and women in the home and workplace, traffic safety, and cancer awareness were also explored at the meeting through presentations, workshops, and youth sessions. Tara completed Phase I of the USA Leadership Program. She will continue to work with other FCCLA members and advisers in Georgia to encourage others to discover their  strengths, motivate members to target career goals, and initiate a plan to ignite youth leadership in their community. Other meeting highlights included STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition), Spotlight on Projects, and a Relay for Life Rally. What a privilege!

Congratulations to Nathaniel "Nate" Thomas, Shaw's Governor's Honors student in Voice at Valdosta State University. He received the prestigious honor of being tenor soloist this summer. Jeremy Miles (Sophomore), Chantelle Quintana and Gerald Charleston (Juniors), members of the Raiders News Network (RNN) Team, finished Ninth Place at the National SkillsUSA Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in June. After earning First Place title in Television News Anchoring at the Georgia SkillsUSA Conference, they put forth an outstanding effort among twenty-three teams in the nation. When they arrived at the competition, they were handed more than 20 news articles, a new Tricaster switching machine that they had never used before, and one day to create a three minute, live newscast. The conference was not only about competition, but about education and personal growth for the students and Shaw's GMR program. In Kansas City, the students met and shared ideas with other students from across the country in the fields of mass media and television news. The team of three left feeling confident that they had done their best and were eager to bring what they learned back to the classroom. They hope to return next year for a shot at a medal.  GMR's lead teacher, Kip Patterson stated, "Both the students and I walked away with great enthusiasm and motivation for more at Shaw and in the Muscogee County School District."  Y'all did a great job--it truly is great to be a Shaw Raider!  Many thanks and accolades go to our PIE partners, the MCSD School Board, the GMR Academic Council including MediaCom, the Ledger-Enquirer, WTVM Channel 9, WRBL News 3, the MCSD CTAE Department, and fellow Shaw Raiders for their support.
