The Shaw High School Chess Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month right after school in the SHS Media Center (dates may change because of scheduling conflicts) or Mr. Latimore's classroom. Whether you know absolutely nothing about the game of chess, or you are a whiz, you are invited to come join us! We start playing as soon as at least two players arrive and finish up about 4:30 p.m. As we have done for several years, we will have our annual Shaw High Chess Club winter mini-tournament before the Christmas holidays and then the annual spring tournament in April or May. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of each tournament. This year's winners, as winners in the past, will receive movie passes and gift certificates from Barnes & Noble as prizes. The Shaw Chess Club was formed for three basic purposes: (1) socialize with other students who either play chess or want to learn to play chess; (2) to enter competitions with other high schools in the area and/or the state; (3) and to increase academic performance. Recent studies conducted in schools around the world have found that there is a correlation between playing chess and a student's academic performance. These studies have found that with students who play chess, the students' self-confidence increases, their math and reading skills/grades rise through learning to use higher-level thinking skills and powers of concentration, their decision-making skills improve, and more. If you know of anyone who knows chess well and would like to come to our weekly meetings at Shaw to help tutor our club, please email Mrs. McDuffie at rmcduffie@mcsdga.net or Mr. Latimore at olatimore@mcsdga.net.
