Congratulations to Coach and Teacher Craig Fitts for being selected by the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's December 25 edition as All-Bi-City Coach
of the Year and running back Arsensio Williams as All-Bi-City Offensive Football
Player of the Year. The Ledger commented on Coach Fitts' achievement this
year, "Fitts took over for long-time Raiders' coach Charles Flowers after
serving seven seasons as an assistant coach. He helped the Raiders finish third
in their region, only losing games to LaGrange and Carver along the way. But his
team was at its best in the playoffs, advancing to the Class AAA championship
game. The Raiders finished with a 12-3 record and the state runner-up trophy."
The Ledger's comments on Arsenio were "Williams was an extremely
productive runner this season. In just 141 carries, he gained 1,275 yards and
scored 15 touchdowns. Williams also had 25 catches for 312 yards and seven
touchdowns. The senior tailback didn't play in the state championship game as he
was suffering from a high-ankle sprain." Roderick Winston, Chandler Anderson
(has earned All-Bi-City honors as kicker the last two seasons), Ben Silvera, and
Bryan Willis were selected to the All-Bi-City Football Team (Defense), while
Bruce Figgins, Cam Greathouse, Jarvis Pitts, and Antonio Davison were selected
to the All-Bi-City Football Team (Offense). Demetrius Jackson was selected to
the Second-Team Defense, and Marcus Jenkins was selected to the Second-Team
Offense. Darnell Smith was selected to the Offensive and Defensive Honorable
Mentions.
You can see why we're very proud not only of these players and this coach but
the rest of our Raider football team! "Raiders are champs here in hometown" read Dusty Nix's (for the editorial board) editorial for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer after our 28-7 loss to Peach County in the AAA State Championship game. The Ledger went on to say, "The word you most often hear to describe this year's Raider team is 'overachievers'--not a knock on the team's collection of talent, but a tribute to its collective heart. Shaw didn't have home field advantage for a single playoff game, but rather took its efforts on the road for five straight postseason contests, winning all but the last one.... In any case, Shaw represented this community with determination, courage, and class. They're winners, and we congratulate them on a great season." That says it all team! You are "our" champs! The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's descriptions of "rise 'n' shine" and "spirit-filled game" vividly describe the Raiders' 16-14 win over Carver Friday, December 8 at the dome in Atlanta!! The Shaw Raiders will play Peach County Saturday, December 15 at 3:00PM at Ft. Valley for the State Championship title. Congratulations Mighty Raiders! Shaw was honored by Channel One with the "Play of the Week." This segment of the daily Channel One news program aired on December 8, 2006, as the Mighty Raider football team took on the Carver tigers at the Georgia dome. The "Play of the Week," videotaped by senior Tim Turner who has videotaped the Raiders throughout this football season, highlighted an exciting second quarter run by Shaw senior Arsenio Williams following a handoff by Shaw quarterback Cam Greathouse in the November 26, 2006, game against Monroe High School in Albany. This run resulted in a touchdown that led to a victory over Monroe and advancement in the state playoffs. This is the only second time that Shaw has been featured on the "Play of the Week," the other being a play by Shaw softball players, Brittany Day and Brittany Richardson in 2002. For being selected as the school of "The Play of the Week," Shaw will receive a cooler and a supply of Gatorade. Congratulations to Arsenio Williams, Cam Greathouse, Tim Turner, and all the Mighty Raider Football Team for "The Play of the Week!" We're going to the dome!!! Shaw won 6-0 in the AAA Quarterfinals Friday, December 2, against Grady High School in Atlanta. The Raider football team is Shawsome! We will play Carver High School in the Dome Friday, December 8 at 9AM. Note below some of the many signs erected at the school entrance for each Shaw football player going to the Dome plus signs and photos taken as players were leaving for the Dome . Victory over Carver--see it, feel it, live it!!!!
