CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS
Winners of Shaw's 2007 Winter Chess Mini-tournament are the following: Austin Kim, First Place; Corey Bentson, Second Place; and John Colwell and Gregory Goosby tied for Third Place. Congratulations guys. Good job!

COMMUNITY
Students in Shaw's SkillsUSA set a goal in October of raising $1,000 for six-year-old Chloe Shiver who has to travel to New York City to receive treatments for neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that attacks a part of the nervous system. In a ceremony at Shaw on December 21, Chloe and her family were presented a check for $1,650. In addition to the check, Chloe also received some early Christmas gifts from her new Shaw family. Chloe's mother, Amy Shiver said, "It means a lot. I'm grateful that especially teenagers got together to do this for us." Pictured below with Chloe is her grandmother, Becky Paul, Bob Yarbrough, SkillsUSA sponsor, Brittany Black, Mandy Mussatti, Logan Bourne, and Michaela Waldeck, students who walked from classroom to classroom
with a large bucket and Chloe's story each Friday collecting money.

FINE ARTS
Congratulations to the following Shaw High School "Sound of Silver" Band members: Kourtney Holland (senior, flute player); Alex Cooper (senior, trumpet player); Anthony Claiborne (junior, alto sax player); and Sammy Fells (junior, baritone player). These students auditioned for the Georgia Music Education Association District 3 Honor Band for 2008 and made the final cut. The audition took place at Columbus High School, December 8. These students also auditioned for All State 2008; the results will be announced later.

Amy Pippins, Kyle Shelton, and DeAndre Murphy whose painted school desks were displayed at Winterfest at the River Center were the only high school students represented this year with art work by students. Congratulations to Mrs. Lynn Butler and her students on representing Shaw High School!

A piano recital for the Piano Class was performed on December 13 at 7  PM at CSU's Legacy Hall located in the River Center.

Raiders, if you missed the combined performance on December 11 of the Shaw concert band, orchestra, and choral groups, "Christmas Around the World," you missed a real treat--beautiful holiday and Christmas music from pop to classical to traditional. Soloists, Chris Ross and Nate Thomas were wonderful, as were all the different groups. And who knew that Juan Pickett, Shaw wrestler, football player, and track team member, could dance like that! Congratulations to Mr. George Cobb, Ms. Rachel Champ, Mrs. Adonna Clark, Mrs. Tandra Holyfield, and a big "Thank you! to Mr. Armondo Garza for his accompaniment.  A thank you also to Mrs. Lynn Butler and her art students who prepared the beautiful art work and to the folks who made the great food for the dessert buffet. Altogether, it was a Shawsome evening!

"Santa and the Wicked Wazoo" was performed on December 18 at 7PM and then at 1:30 PM for students at Eagle Ridge Elementary and Shaw. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the show!
