Special Education Department We, as educators are here to work with you, other faculty members, and your student to provide the best possible education. We work very closely within our department to maintain the best method to educate your student on an individual basis. The faculty at Shaw is very cooperative and most willing to make adjustments, should the need arise. We also need to solicit your help, as well. Each special education student has a special education teacher assigned to him/her. This teacher serves as the student's advisor, as well as the person responsible for implementing the IEP. Become familiar with this individual. Also, know the teachers' names and classes your student will be attending during the school day. There should be four the first term and four the second term. It is very important that you and your student understand that in order to receive credit for the class and move on to the next grade level, he/she must pass the course work. Be aware of the requirements for each class and become an active part of your student's high school education. We do have a separate telephone line for the special education department. The telephone is located in Mrs. White's room. She does have students in classes until 11:00 a.m. It would be most difficult to discuss a student prior to this time. Please keep this in mind when you find it necessary to make a call. You may call before 7:45 a.m. or after 11:00 a.m. Should we be conducting a meeting, we will indicate that to you and take your number and return the call as soon as possible. Should
your student be referred to the Assistant Principal for discipline and require
ISSP, he/she will serve that time within the Special Education Department with
an assigned teacher. Saturday School will also be a time that a special
education teacher is present. This is to provide the appropriate education for
the student, according to federal/state laws. Contrary to what your student may tell you, special education students do have homework. Each student will be issued a planner/calendar by the school for the year. We are requiring that all students have his/her planner in class at all times. This would be a good method for follow-up at home. Just
remember we are all here for one purpose -- for your student to get the best
possible education. Please be ready to work with us, as teachers, to help your
student accomplish this goal. |
