ATHLETICS
Athletic Awards
Chantelle Quintana and Juan Pickett have been nominated for the Athletes for a Better World (Vince) Dooley Award. They will be attending a luncheon with the Atlanta Braves. Only 10 female and 10 male students across Georgia are finalists, and we have ONE OF EACH (the only MCSD school represented)! Congratulations to you both for this wonderful honor!

Additionally, Juan Pickett was honored with being named an All Bi-City wrestler. Congratulations, Juan!

Signings
Latisha Francis and Stephen Waynick, both members of Shaw's cross country team, and Bryan Willis, a member of Shaw's football team, signed their letters of intent on February 6 in the Shaw Media Center at 9:30. Latisha and Stephen will be attending Columbus State University, and Bryan will be attending Troy University. We're so proud of you! Go Raiders!

Wrestling
Congratulations to Juan Pickett for winning the
Carter Butts Outstanding Wrestler Award at the City Wrestling Championship on February 2!  Juan also won the Heavyweight Division (275 pound category), and Tevin Sanders placed Third in the 119 pound category. At the 2-AAA Area Tournament held at LaGrange High School on Saturday February 16, Juan Pickett took First Place in the 275 pound category, and Tevin Sanders took Second Place in the 119 pound category--on to State they go! 

Congratulations again to Juan Pickett and Tevin Sanders who went to the State Wrestling Tournament at Gwinnett Center February 20-23; Juan Pickett finished in Third Place in the Heavyweight Division--Juan had a great season--a great four years! Also, congratulations to Tevin Sanders who finished in the Quarterfinals.  Great job Tevin. Y'all are absolutely Shawsome, Raiders! Thanks also to the Shaw wrestling team for a hard-working season!

CLUBS
French Club
French Club celebrated Mardi Gras in a celebration after school on Tuesday, February 5.. Students ate King Cake and were crowned King or Queen for the day. They students also enjoyed Cajun music and learned Cajun vocabulary. Mrs. Jennifer Robinson is the club sponsor.

Green Club
Luke Wagner and Jake Campbell, along with club sponsor, Mrs. Brantley Ford, were featured on WTVM News 9 at 6 PM on Tuesday, February 12. Mrs. Ford nominated them for the News Leader Award.

Raider Reader Book Club
Students met with their favorite teen librarian, Ms. Bridgin Boddy, from the Columbus Public Library during their lunch break on Thursday, February 28, to discuss one or more of the four different titles that individual members had read from a selected list. Pictured below are a few of the Shaw students who shared their thoughts on this nine weeks' selections.  Mrs. Sonya Boyd and Mrs. Rosie McDuffie are the club's sponsors.

Skills USA
On February 22, students from Shaw's Skills USA attended the Region 4 competition at Columbus Tech.  Wes Hicks placed First in Carpentry; Josh Febo placed First in Masonry; and Chris Fuhrman placed Second in Cabinet Making. Logan Bourne, Latashia Douglas, YaYa Ortiz, Taylor Shellnutt, and Michaela Waldeck, , and placed Third in Quiz Bowl. All First and Second place contest winners will now go to the state Skills USA competition in April in Atlanta, Georgia. All of these students worked hard, and once again they show why Shaw is the best! Mr. Bob Yarbrough is the club sponsor. FINE ARTS
Band
Alex Cooper
(trumpet), Kourtney Holland (flute), Anthony Claiborne (alto saxophone), and Sammy Fells (baritone) were selected to participate in the GMEA District 3 Honor Band in LaGrange at Troup County High School on February 8 and 9. Through the All-State Audition process, they acquired scores high enough to be in the Honor Band along with other students in District 3. Mr. George Cobb is their band director.

Choral
Chris Ross and Bryan Brown were honored at the All-State Chorus Concert in Savannah the weekend of February 23. Chris was given a solo out of 375 students and Bryan was honored for being a sixth year All-State participant. Congratulations Chris and Bryan! Ms. Rachel Champ is their choral director.

Orchestra
Congratulations to Shaw sophomore Jamare Williams and freshman Priyanka Chatterjee who participated in the 2008 All District Honor Orchestra on February 23 and 24 at Hardaway High School!! Mrs. Adona Clark is their orchestra director. (Pictured l to r: Priyanka and Jamare.)

HAPPENINGS
Ms. Ruth Caton and Mrs. Angie Jacobson's economics classes participated in mock interviews given by Mr. Steven Fuller, a local businessman, Dr. Hank Hall, a local veterinarian, Mrs. Rebekah Atkinson, a student teacher at Shaw this semester, Michelle Coverson and Arnell Hall, our Partner in Education University of Phoenix representatives, Mrs. Karen Clarke, local nurse, and Ms. Laurie McInroy, Mrs. Haley Hudson, Mrs. Brantley Ford, Mrs. Anona Porterfield, Mr. Kevin Harrington, Shaw teachers, and Mrs. Sonya Boyd, and Mrs. Rosie McDuffie, Shaw media specialists. Thanks to all who make this a total success! Outstanding Senior Interview Candidates were Roderick Mitchell, Monique Sutton, and Dominik Green.

HONORS
Luke Wagner, Shaw senior, was awarded Outstanding Attorney at the Regional Mock Trial Competition in Albany Georgia, on February 23. Congratulations Luke! Coached by volunteer attorneys and teachers, teams of 14 students worked together to prepare their presentations from case materials. In the competition phase, students played the role of attorneys and witnesses based on the evidence and witness statements. Professional attorneys or judges served as the presiding judges and juror/evaluators. Teams were evaluated on their ability to make a logical, cohesive and persuasive presentation, rather than on the legal merits of the case. Adding to the authenticity of the competition, teams competed in actual courtrooms across the state beginning with the regional competitions. Mrs. Sheree Tovey is Shaw's Mock Trial sponsor.

Stephanie-Joy Rhoden was selected as Shaw's 2008 Miss Raider Pride on February 21. The ladies competed in two categories, casual wear and formal wear, and were judged on poise, appearance, and attire. Members of her court are Nya Tanner is Miss Spring; Danielle Noble is Miss Summer; KeAnna Smith is Miss Fall, and Janecia Hill is Miss Winter.  Congratulations ladies! Chantelle Quintana and Joseph Housel both placed Second in the region Social Studies Fair. Congratulations Chantelle and Joseph!

Congratulations to Samantha Special who placed first in the American Legion Oratory Contest at the post level and the district level of competition the weekend of February 2. Mrs. Lynda Kannady is her sponsor. Samantha will travel to Albany the weekend of February 23 and 24 representing Shaw High School and the 3rd Congressional District competing at the area level. Good luck to Samantha for further success in this endeavor!

Amy Pippins is Shaw's representative to the Youth of the Month luncheon for the month of February at the Exchange Club of Columbus. Amy selected Mrs. Mona Griffin as the teacher to accompany her. Congratulations to Amy and Mrs. Griffin!
