ATHLETICS
Basketball
Congratulations to Treasure Johnson and Pat Powell for being selected from among
high school basketball players from Muscogee, Harris, Troup, Macon and
Chattahoochee counties in Georgia and Russell, Lee, and Chambers counties in
Alabama to play in the Bi-City All-Star classic in March 24 at Columbus State's
Lumpkin Center. They will play on the East teams.

Football
Chandler Anderson, Shaw senior, participated in the Rafter Pro Kicking
Competition January 1 and received first in punting with an average of 46 yards
per punt along with another first place in kick offs. Way to go Chandler!
Swim Team
The Raider Men's Swim team placed second, and the Women's placed third in the Creekside Invitational in Atlanta on January 12. The following swimmers placed
fourth and/or above in their events: Reid Lynch fourth in 50 Free and third in
Backstroke; Keagan Wood fourth in Breaststroke; Mike Janzen fourth in 200 Free
and fourth in 100 Free; Tony Torian third in 200 Individual Medley and fourth in
100 Free; Blaine Hooper First in 500 Free; Katlyn Butzin second in 100
Breastroke; Kris Kotwal third in 100 Backtroke; and Joann Rivas fourth in 200
Free and third in 100 Breaststroke. Congratulations to the swim team for
outstanding swimming.
The Shaw boys' swim team placed third, and the girls' team
placed fourth at the City Championship meet January 29. Top finishers were
Blaine Hooper placing third in 500 Freestyle; the Boys' 200 Free Relay placed
third; Reid Lynch placed third in the 100 Backstroke and set a school record;
Tony Torian placed fourth in the 50 Freestyle; BJ Chapman placed fourth in the
200 Freestyle; Joann Rivas placed fourth in the 100 Breast Stroke; Keagan Wood
placed fourth in the 100 Breast Stroke; the girls' 200 Medley Relay placed
fourth; and the boys' 200 Medley Relay placed fourth and set as school record.
Congratulations to the Shaw Raider Swim Team!
Wrestling
Shaw's wrestling team competed in the city tournament the weekend of
January 26-27 and finished sixth overall. Five of the ten wrestlers who were in
the tournament placed. Chad Smith won the 215 pound division, and Juan Pickett
was the champion in the heavyweight division. Carson Grimsley placed second at
125, and Shaw Havens was also second at 160. Jamal Boulware placed fourth at
145. Congratulations to all of these Raider wrestlers.
AUDITORIUM
AND FINE ARTS RENOVATION
Renovation has started on our auditorium! Remember those worn out gold-colored
seats? They are GONE! And look a chair lift going to the band and orchestra
rooms! Keep tuned for updates!
FINE ARTS
Several students of Shaw's Sound of Silver Band program auditioned
with thousands of high school students from Georgia and around the nation
January 18 through 21 at the 2007 Jam Fest Honor Band at the University of
Georgia and were placed in different bands and
played high levels of music under the direction of big name band directors. The
students also attended multiple concerts and master classes for their respective
instrument. Shaw students participating were Jessica Elmore,
Kourtney Holland,
Michael McCoy, and Trip
Parker.
HONORS
Academic
Decathlon
The Shaw High School Academic Decathlon team competed in the 20th annual
Muscogee County Academic Decathlon Saturday, January 6, at Kendrick High School.
The team put on a good show and won seven medals. Individual medal winners
were as follows: Jarrod Blaxton placed third in Math in the Honors division;
Diamond Marion placed third in Social Science and second in Essay in the Varsity
division; Trip Parker placed second in Economics, third in Music and third in
Essay in the Varsity division; and Gabriela Borrell placed third in Interview in
the Honors division. Congratulations to all our decathletes!
Fine Arts
Congratulations to all thirteen Shaw High School Chorus students who not only
made the first difficult cut for All-State, but Saturday, January 20, they
passed the second audition for All-State. The following will represent Shaw in
Savannah at the All-State Chorus 2007: Jeffrey Edwards, Rosa Mayrim, Bryan
Brown, Marcus Jenkins, Disiree Figueroa, Dawson Carlton, Audra King, Camerae
Lang, Chris Ross, Nathaniel Thomas, Ernest Seldon, Charlie McIlrath, and Antoine
Berry. Nine of the thirteen students made scores above 90 to get a gold
seal on their All-State certificate. Great job Raiders!
Social
Studies
Huge congratulations go out to Chantelle Quintana and Samatha Special for placing first and best in
show at the MCSD Social Studies Fair. Chantelle's project was titled
"African-American Contribution during the Civil War." Samantha's
project was entitled "Dr. John Stith Pemberton." Chantelle and Samantha will go on to
compete in the regional Social Studies Fair in Albany, Georgia. Capricia Moore
placed second, and Juan Pickett placed third. Well done, Raiders!
Vocational
Shaw High School winners at the FBLA Region 6 Competition were Sarah Macon
(Database Design & Application) with third place; Christal Judge and Jeremy
Miles (Digital Production) with second place; Tammy Sanchez (Spreadsheet
Applications) with first place; Janice Cerri (Word Processing II) with third
place; and Antoine Berry, Jarred Thompkins, and Sydney Stallings (Multimedia
Presentations) with fourth place. Sarah, Christal, Jeremy, and Tammy all advance
to state competition. Way to go Raiders!!
NEW TEEN DRIVING REQUIREMENTS
Beginning January 1, 2007, all 16 year-olds applying for a Class D driver's
license must complete an approved driver education course and complete a total
of 40 hours of supervised driving, six hours of which must be at night, with a
parent or guardian's sworn verification that these requirements have been met.
Any Georgia resident who has not completed an approved driver education course
must be at least 17 years old to be eligible for a Class D driver's license.
He or she must have completed a total of at least 40 hours of supervised
driving, including at least six hours at night. The same verification in
writing by a parent or guardian is required. Click

PTSA/OPEN HOUSE
Second Semester PTSA/Open House is Monday, January 22 at 6:30PM. It will begin
with a brief meeting in the gym and then on to Advisors to pick up students'
schedules. Each period will be ten minutes. Parents come meet your
children's teachers for second semester!
