ATHLETICS
Swim Team
A special congratulations goes to the Shaw Swim Team who competed in the City
Finals on January 28! Tony Torian, team
captain, placed Third in the region in both the 50 meter free style and the 100
yard backstroke. Reid Lynch placed Fourth in
the region in the 100 yard backstroke. The boys' relay team consisting of
David Hunter, Tony
Torian, Reid Lynch, and
Julian Chica won Second in the district.
ATHLETIC SIGNINGS
Baseball players, Donte Williams and
Cam Greathouse both signed their letters of intent on
Thursday, January 24 in the Shaw Media Center. Y'all are both absolutely
Shawsome! We wish you the very best! More signings will be held on
February 6 at 9:30 AM in the Shaw Media Center.

FBLA
Shaw High School would like to congratulate Gerald
Charleston who took first place for Business Communications at the
FBLA Regional competition; Steven Starley
who placed First for Business Presentation; Keith Smith
placed Second for E-Business; ... placed
Fourth in Website Development; Demi Liptrot
place Fifth in Job Interview; Janice Redding
placed Fifth for Public Speaking II; and Whitney Horton
placed Eighth for Economics. You represented our school well. Good luck to those
continuing on to state.
Green Club
Shaw has a new club--the Green Club. Find out how the Green Club is

Jens Rasmussen, New York City actor and educator, spoke with members of the
Green Club on January 23 in the Shaw Media Center. He led a slide presentation
entitled "Climate Myths and Misconceptions" and answered students' questions on
global warming. He shared the science and mechanics of climate change as well as
offered possible solutions to global warming and a positive view of our future.

Mr. J. A. Pichardo
is our January Teacher of the Month! Congratulations Mr. Pichardo!
Academic Decathlon
Congratulations also to the Shaw Academic Decathlon Team that set an
all-time school record by bringing home eighteen medals from the January 12
competition. Erin Murphy set the bar by
putting Shaw's first three points on the board during the Super Quiz
competition. Corey Bentson placed Third in
English and Art and Second in Economics in the Scholastic category.
Priyanka Chatterjee placed Third in Math,
Science, and Interview, and Second in Music in the Honors category.
Pranam Chatterjee placed Second in Music and
Interview in the Honors category. Terry Hill
placed Second in Art in the Varsity category. Gayla
Jackson placed Second in English and Science and Third in Music and
Interview in the Scholastic category. Crystal Nguyen
placed Third in Economics in the Honors category.
Ventrine Parham placed Second in Music and
Third in Economics and Speech in the Scholastic category. The team also took
Third Place in the Super Quiz competition. Great job students and
Ms. Diana Huddleston, club sponsor!!
All State Chorus

all made 2007-2008 All-State Chorus. Great going Raiders!
DECA
Winners from Shaw at the Georgia DECA -- Region IV Career Development Conference
on January 31 were the following: Daniel Best,

were First Place winners. David-Pierre Hunter,

Manuel Rodriguez were Third Place winners.
Sheri Bloxom, Elizabeth Bone,

winners. These winners will go on to state competition! Fifth Place winners were

Lorenzo Jones, and Sontoria Nuniss.

Fine Arts/Orchestra
Priyanka Chatterjee, freshman at Shaw, was featured in the
Northland Neighbors January 23, 2008, issue in the article entitled "Youth
Orchestra Fosters Love of Music." Priyanka is a member of the Youth
Orchestra of Greater Columbus. She along with her brother
Pranam Chatterjee, who is also a freshman at Shaw,
performed in the orchestra's concert at 7 PM on January 28 in Legacy Hal at the
River Center of the Performing Arts.
MCSD Social Studies Fair
Congratulations to the following students who competed in the MCSD Social
Studies Fair on January 26: First Place winners were

Second Semester Open House
On Thursday, January 24, 2008, Open House for Second Semester classes was held at 6PM.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION CEREMONY
Shaw has a new Partner in Education--the University of Phoenix! The induction
ceremony took place on January 29 in the Media Center.
Principal Dr. Jim Arnold and Brittany
Campbell, Senior Class Vice President, opened the ceremonies with the
Shaw High School Chorus and Band providing musical selections.
Janice Redding, Junior Class President,
introduced the guest speakers Dr. William Kendall, MCSD Administrative Assistant
to the Superintendent; Mr. Kent Fleming, Chairman for Partners in Education; Mr.
Eddie Obleton, Chief Student Services Officer, former Shaw teacher and
principal; Mr. George Monk, Director of Academic Affairs, University of Phoenix;
Mr. Tim Sanders, TSYS Representative, and Mrs. Nancy Grantham, Mediacom.
Ms. Dana Whaley from the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce presented
the Partner in Education certificate. Welcome University of Phoenix; you will
