ATHLETICS
Alumni
On Saturday, January 24, between the varsity girls' and boys' basketball
games with LaGrange, two of our 2001 alumni were honored by the retirement of
their jerseys. Steven Register and
Nick Long, both key figures in the Raiders'
2001 Class AAAA state championship baseball team, were honored. Along with
Steven and Nick, Coach Charles Flowers, former Shaw baseball coach and athletic
director, Coach Dennis Register, and Coach Scott Newman
were also recognized. Coach Flowers was the head coach of the state champions,
and Coaches Newman and Register assisted. Coach Register is also the husband of
our own Mrs. Darlene Register, Guidance
Department Chair, and Steven's father. After graduating high school both Nick
and Steven played professional baseball. Steven is presently with the Colorado
Rockies organization. Nick is no longer playing professional ball but has
returned to college at Georgia State University. He hopes to pursue a career in
sports management. Shaw's baseball team and fans will long remember Nick when
Shaw defeated Columbus High, our long-time rival, 2-0 in the 2001 State
Championship game series, with Long pitching and clinching the final games 2-1
with a one-hitter.

Basketball
Congratulations to Shaw's Boys' Basketball Team who won First Place at the W.
H. Shaw Christmas Tournament championship at Columbus State University!
With one point down from Northside and only a few seconds left in the game,
Khiry White passed the ball to
Deante Caruthers who "hit a jumper" that
gave the Shaw Raiders a one point lead. Northside's attempt at a three point
shot bounced off the rim, and Shaw stormed the court to celebrate their 51-50
win! What an exciting game!! Deante Caruthers
was recognized as the Most Valuable Player for the tournament, and
Khiry White was the top scorer for Shaw in
the city championship game. To see more pictures from the Shaw Christmas
Tournament click here

Over the Christmas holidays, like the Raider basketball team, the Raider
Wrestling Team was busy! On December 20, at the Battle of the Hills Dual at
Chapel Hill High School, the wrestling team came in Third Place. On December 23,
at the Panther Duals at Smith Station, the wrestling team came in Third Place.
On December 26, at the Pacelli Tournament, the team came in Sixth Place;
however, individual who placed were Tevin Sanders,
First Place; Niquaton Hill, Second Place;
Josh Lyon, Miles
Mauldin, and Carlton Williams,
Third Place; Xavier Hamilton and
Craig Goosby, Fourth Place. On December 30,
at the Red Devil Duals in Phenix City the Raiders beat Harris County and
Columbus but lost to Central Phenix City. Then, on January 3, at the Blue Devil
Tournament, Chris Williams,
Michael Loyed, and Tyler McGilton
placed Second, while Justen Lenz and
Terrance Tarver placed Third.
Congratulations guys!
