ATHLETICS
Edwin Jackson, '01 Shaw graduate and 2001 State Baseball Championship standout, was selected to the 2009 All-Star baseball team. The Major League All-Star game was played on July 14, in St. Louis, where Edwin was described by the Detroit Free Press as "pitching a perfect fifth inning; all he needed was only four pitches to get three outs. In his one inning, he retired the side with those four pitches; the one pitch that was not hit was called a strike." And he did it! His team, the AL, won 4-3. Edwin pitches for the Detroit Tigers. We're so proud of you!
HONORS
Shaw's rising senior, Jacquez "Jack" Patterson was featured in the July 15 issue of the Columbus-Ledger Northland Neighbors! Students from across the Southeast attended classes in journalistic writing, television, news broadcasting, photojournalism, and graphic design at this summer's Georgia Journalism Academy at the University of Georgia. This was Jack's second one to attend. His editorial written in his journalistic writing group, entitled "Freedom Is Not Always a Good Thing," addressed the No Child Left Behind Act and its impact on school life in Muscogee County. As a result of his writing, Jack was named "Rockstar," the best in his editorial writing class! Jack has been a vital and active part of The Silver Star, Shaw's student newspaper since his sophomore year. He will serve as Editor in Chief for the newspaper this school year. He has also written for In the Game Magazine, a monthly magazine that highlights scholastic sports throughout Georgia, but more specifically, in Jack's case, the Columbus Valley edition. Jack is also a member of Shaw's boys' varsity tennis team, Shaw's Green Club, and Shaw's Model United Nations. Congratulations, Jack!
RAIDER PREP CAMP
To ease the often intimidating transition from middle school to high school, Shaw High School offers a free transition program for upcoming ninth graders. This year's camp will be from July 27-31 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The students will participate in a variety of activities, led by Shaw faculty, which will include not only reviewing their core classes but also learning study skills; graduation requirements; promotion policies; familiarization with the school layout and grounds; the Student Handbook; Honors and AP class offerings; grade level requirements; student clubs, activities, and programs; honor society requirements; student government groups; community service activities; Global Media Resources magnet program; and athletic opportunities at Shaw. By attending the camp, your student will benefit from a morning program where he or she will experience high school life led by Shaw teachers. The camp is designed to help your student achieve success in high school. Students also experience and learn through problem solving activities and are encouraged to be self-directed learners. The program will conclude with a luncheon for students and their parents on Thursday, July 31 at 11:30 AM.
