Georgia Academic Service Learning
Academic service learning is a K-12 teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, personal growth and civic responsibility.  Service learning allows students to learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service.  Service learning provides avenues that are coordinated through collaboration between schools and communities.

2003 -- 2004 School Year
Shaw High School has been a part of Georgia Academic Service Learning since 2003.   The project, which was funded by a 2003 -- 2004 Georgia Academic Service Learning grant, included over 250 students from grades 9-12.  These students interviewed local veterans and citizens who lived, served and fought during World War II, wrote and edited biographical essays from the interviews, gave reflective speeches and published a compilation of the biographies in a book entitled Saluting Our Heroes, Part I -- World War II.  All participants were given a copy of the book, and a copy was also donated to all public and school libraries in Columbus, Ft. Benning and the Historic Columbus Foundation.

Students interacted with an older generation to learn history from eyewitness accounts and to understand the impact of World War II on their community.  Shaw students also produced Social Studies Fair projects using information from the interviews.  In celebration of the completion of the Service Learning Project, the veterans and citizens were entertained with a USO-style show written and produced by the students in Shaw's Fine Arts Department based on the information from the interviews and other research.

2004 -- 2005 School Year
The successful educational experience of Saluting Our Heroes, Part I:  World War II convinced Shaw High students and faculty to pursue Phase Two, the Korean War.  Again, over 250 Shaw students honored the service of veterans and community leaders who participated in and lived during the Korean War.  From the information gained in the interviews, students wrote and edited biographical essays, presented speeches, edited, organized, analyzed, synthesized and evaluated the information collected from these interviews to compile an oral history of veteran and citizen biographies for Saluting Our Heroes, Part II:  The Korean War.  A hardcopy of the collection has been presented to each participant and recipient.  A copy will be donated to each library in Muscogee County, each school library, each Ft. Benning school library and the Historic Columbus Archives.  Through these interviews and relationships with the veterans and other citizens, students gained a valuable perspective about the Korean War which is often overlooked as a significant event in history, except for those who were directly involved.  Many of the students gave over 100 hours of service in participating in this project.  The reaction by the veteran and community recipients was overwhelming, giving strong confirmation of the need to preserve such oral histories.  Veterans repeatedly expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to tell their stories to such interested young people when they had so often felt that their sacrifices were forgotten.  They also appreciated the opportunity to establish connections between military and civilian communities, and the younger and older generations to personalize and to preserve the relevance of the experiences and sacrifices demanded by this event in American history.

2005 -- 2006 School Year
Phase Three, the Vietnam War is honoring those who served or were families of those who served during the Vietnam War.  Below are photos taken of some of our veterans who were interviewed for Phase Three and photos taken at Appreciation Night honoring those veterans.  Stay tuned for more details and news of this year's project.

Learn and Serve Projects for the Vietnam War
The social studies department held their annual Social Studies Fair in the Shaw Media Center the week of December 5 with several of the entries being on different topics the Vietnam War.  Additionally, Mrs. Scott's science students researched Agent Orange and its affects.

Welcome Home Celebration
On Thursday, March 30, 2006, the students, faculty, administration, and staff of Shaw and Hardaway High Schools held a Welcome Home Celebration for the Veterans of the Vietnam War.  There were speeches from soldiers and officers who participated in the war and music from the band and chorus.  This event was immediately followed by a reception in the Media Center, and the participants were given a copy of the student-made collection of biographies, Saluting Our Heroes, Part III:  Vietnam War.  News and media coverage publicized the event.

A Note from Dr. Jim Arnold
The Shaw High School Service Learning Project "Saluting Our Heroes" has completed its third year, and we have indeed met our share of heroes.  We envisioned a variety of teaching opportunities; we received a resurgence of student interest that was enormously refreshing.  We planned for expanded learning opportunities; we experienced a level of creativity and student achievement that once again transcended our hopes and reaffirmed our beliefs in the power of learning.  We had hoped for a positive experience for our students and our faculty; what we experienced is expressed in Saluting Our Heroes, Part III: Vietnam War.  We reinforced our lessons from the first two years, and once again saw that personal contact enhances student learning; that history may be learned from reading but becomes reality when we speak to those who make it; and that many things worth knowing are best expressed and learned by personal contact.

We extend eternal gratitude to the Veterans who selflessly shared their experiences with us.  Our students have discovered through this process an expanded sense of history and a keen awareness of its influences on  their families, city, state and country in the not so distant past.  They told us of the fears of young men and women facing combat, made real for us the horror of war and destruction, and personalized the sacrifices that families made for the defense of freedom in places too soon forgotten.

These are vital lessons for students and for teachers that speak to the heart of the educational process and cannot be measured by standardized tests.

Thanks to all of you who helped us teach our students about character
, bravery, sacrifice, patriotism, and the things that combine to make our nation free and strong.

Awards and Honors
On Monday, October 4, 2004, Dr. Jim Arnold, Mrs. Kay Agnew, Mrs. Lynda Kannady, Mrs. Ginger Starling, and Mrs. Rosie McDuffie from Shaw traveled to Atlanta to receive a GHRAB Award for Excellence in Archival Program Development from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board and Secretary of State Cathy Cox for the oral history project Saluting Our Heroes:  Part I -- World War II.   Shaw received a beautiful plaque to represent our accomplishment and a copy of our book was donated to the Georgia Archives.

Shaw High School's oral history project, Saluting Our Heroes:  Part II -- Korean War,  from the 2004-2005 school year also received a GHRAB Award for Excellence in Archival Program Development from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board in Atlanta on October 3, 2005. Representing Shaw were Dr. Jim Arnold, Ms. Heidi Platz, and Mrs. Rosie McDuffie.  Pictured below is Dr. Arnold receiving the honor from Laura Meadows, Assistant Secretary of State, and David Carmichael, Director of Georgia Department of Archives and History.

2006 -- 2007 School Year
This school year, Shaw High School's ninth grade citizenship students complied a local history honoring people and places that have made significant financial, developmental, social, or architectural impact on Columbus, Georgia. They photographed the landmarks, interviewed citizens, and produced a book that indeed celebrates their city. Mrs. Lynn Butler's advanced art students provided many of the photographs and illustrations for the celebration. Their projects were edited by their peers and included interviewing, on-site visits, and intense research to complete the project for a competition judged by educators, community members, and local businesses for inclusion in Celebrating Columbus, a book which will be presented to the Chamber of Commerce, placed in local libraries, and in the Historic Columbus archives. This project encompassed two semesters and focused on improving writing skills and community awareness. On Thursday, April 26, "Celebrating Columbus" was presented and "celebrated" in the Shaw High School Media Center to students, faculty, and staff. Community leaders and all ASL participants were invited. During the Celebration, the Shaw Show Choir performed pop numbers, and students presented glimpses of history through the lives of Carson McCullers and other notable Columbusites. Mrs. Nila Burt, Coordinator for this year's Learn and Serve Program, presented a copy of the book to Dr. Marietta Webb, Director of Career Technology at Shaw. This year's book, Celebrating Columbus, was dedicated  to Dr. Webb.
