ADMINISTRATION
Congratulations to Dr. Marietta Webb, our Vocational
Director, and Ricky Stone, 1988 Shaw graduate and former math teacher, for their
appointments as principals of Academic Success and Jordan Vocational High School
respectively.
ATHLETICS
Basketball
Recent accomplishments of our Boys' Basketball team include the following:
- Patrick Powell made the Christmas Tournament
All-Tournament Team.
- Antonio Bailey set a school record making eight (8)
three pointers on Senior Night vs Hardaway.
- Demarcus McCrory had back-to-back 30 point games in
the Region Tournament scoring 33 points against Carver and then scoring 30
points against Northside.
- We placed fourth at the Region 2-AAA Tournament.
- We upset #4 ranked Glenn Hills in Round 1 of the
State Play-offs.
- We were the only Region 2-AAA boys' team to return to
the State Play-offs this year for the second year in a row.
- Demarcus McCrory and Patrick Powell both made the All
Region 2-AAA Tournament Team.
- Our final record this year was 19-10.
- We made the round of Sweet Sixteen this year.
We are so proud of you and all your accomplishments!
The First Annual Bi-City All-Star High School Basketball Classic was held
Saturday, March 24 at the CSU Lumpkin Center. The event showcased the best
basketball players in the Bi-City Area. Shaw's own Treasure Johnson and Patrick
Powell participated in the game.
Football
Congratulations to our "new man" on the Shaw's football coaching
staff--Coach Scott Newman!! Though, not really new to Shaw nor the
football team, Coach Newman will head up the Shaw football team as Head Football
coach. We are so pleased and happy for you!
Track
Congratulations to the Shaw track team for performing well at their meet at Ft.
Valley Saturday, March 10. Anton Graphenreed won four medals and was awarded
best male track athlete at the Wildcat High School Invitational! Y'all are
Shawsome!
At the Columbus Relays held March 28 at Kinnett Stadium, Shaw boys place first
and the girls placed second. Y'all are just great!
Wrestling
Juan Pickett and Carson Grimsley were recognized as First Team members for All
Bi-City Wrestling. Juan Pickett, junior, dominated all of the Bi-City's
heavyweights this season. He went 36-5 and was the city champion and the Area
2-AAA champion. Juan placed third in the state and should contend for a state
title next year, according to the Ledger-Enquirer. Carson Grimsley,
senior, won the Area 2-AAA championship in the125 weight class. He went on to
finish fifth in the state tournament. Carson went 34-7 this season and finished
second at the city championship. James Bradley and Chad Smith were selected as
Second Team members. Way to go Raiders!
CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS
Congratulations to Shaw's FBLA Parliamentary Procedures Team for placing ninth
at the FBLA State Leadership Conference. Those members on the team were
Darrin Marshall, Latisha Francis, Jessica Calloway, and Narissa Huling.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Shaw students Ellie Guzman, Amy Pippins, Brittany Martinez, and Ventrine Parham
participated in "Hushpuppies & Harmony," a benefit to raise funds for Open Door
Community House on March 9. Cameron Baskin who organized the benefit raised over
$4,000 to help Open Door
Community!
A fundraiser to help the students at Enterprise High
School (EHS) in Coffee County, Alabama, whose school was destroyed by a tornado
began March 19 and continued for one week. Shaw's Silver Star newspaper
staff members checked classrooms fourth block to collect change students had
deposited into coffee cups (their newspaper is called The Coffee Cup).
Over $2,000 was collected! Shaw Raiders always come through!!!
To show Shaw High School's support for our troops, Mrs. Shannon Crews, Mrs.
Darlene Register's intern from Troy State encouraged Shaw students to
bring in items from a long list (food, practical, personal, and just for fun
items) to donate to the men and women of the 2/69 3rd Birgade at Ft. Benning who are serving our country overseas.
The first period class with the most donations at the end of the week won a
doughnut and juice party. Mrs. Kannady's, Mrs. Porterfield's, and Mr. Ceasar's
classes tied as winning classes! Yellow ribbons were also tied around trees
lining the Shaw parking lot, and students wrote postcards to the soldiers
showing Shaw's support for our troops. Shaw itself has approximately 100
students who have family members serving overseas with the 3rd Birgade. The
competition started on Monday, March 26 and continued through Friday, March 30.
FINE ARTS
Band
The Shaw Band Large Group Performance Preview Concert will be Tuesday, March 6,
from 7:00 -- 8:00 PM in the Shaw Auditorium. The performances will include
Blackmon Road Middle School students. On Tuesday, March 13, the Shaw
Band Large Group Performance Concert will perform at 6:00 PM in the Jordan High
School Auditorium. Come support your fellow students and enjoy their beautiful
music.
Congratulations to the Symphonic Band students! They received superior ratings
at the District III Performance Evaluations. A very special congratulations to
Trip Parker who received a superior rating for student conductor!
Choral
Congratulations to the Advanced Men's Chorus, the Advanced Mixed Chorus, and the
Advanced Women's Chorus who made overall superior ratings at Large Group
Performance Evaluation on March 15 and 16. In the tradition of of Shaw High
School, we are proud of our chorus! Great, or rather, SUPERIOR job!! Also,
congratulations to Carlton Dawson who placed second in State Literary Meet at
Houston County High School on March 17. Way to go Carlton!
Orchestra
Congratulations also to the Shaw High School Orchestra for their success at the
GMEA Festival. Shaw scored straight "superiors" for their performance!
Region Literary Meet
At Region Literary Meet, Audra King placed fourth in Girl's Dramatic
Interpretation; Chris Ross, Carlton Dawson, Bryan Brown, and Marcus Jenkins
placed fourth in Men's Quartet; Desiree Figueroa, Jenisse Wilson, and Camerae
Lang placed third in Girl's Trio; Jenisse Wilson placed third in Girl's Solo,
and Carlton Dawson placed first in Boy's Solo! At State Literary Meet, Carlton
Dawson placed second in Boy's Solo! Great going Raiders!
Spring Drama Production
Spring Production rehearsals have begun! This year's production is "Rock Around
the Clock," a musical tribute to Motown and the early rock 'n roll era. The cast
includes 38 talented actors, dancers, and singers from Shaw High School. The
production dates are May 11 and 12 at 7:30PM in the Shaw auditorium. Tickets
will be $5. Come have some fun and enjoy the production!
FRESHMEN OPEN HOUSE
Open house for incoming
freshmen will be May 1 at 6:30PM in the Shaw auditorium.
GMR
MAGNET OPEN HOUSE
Due to all MCSD school activities being cancelled the night of March 1, the
Magnet Open House has been rescheduled for March 22, 2007, from 6:30 -- 7:30PM
in the Shaw High School auditorium
for interested applicants and families. Take the time to visit our school, talk
with our teachers; talk with our students and begin to discover what we already
know--it's great to be a Shaw Raider!
HONORS
Student Honors
Congratulations to the 2006-2007 Miss Raider Pride and her court! Miss
Raider Pride is Jill Bradley. Her court consists of Courtney Marshall, Miss
Spring; Jamie Bankston, Miss Summer; Ebony Lewis, Miss Fall; and Valarie
Edwards, Miss Winter.
Two of Shaw's seniors were featured in the March 28 edition of Northland
Neighbors--Kayla Whitaker and Peaches Parham concerning Kayla's winning the
Whitney Kees Memorial Award at the 17th Annual Drug-Free You and Me Conference
and Peaches' representing Shaw in the 2006-2007 Reader of the Year Awards
sponsored by the Muscogee Reading Association on March 9 at Columbus State
University.
Chandler Anderson was honored Thursday, March 29 at the Columbus Exchange Club
luncheon as Shaw's Youth of the Month. Great going!
Congratulations to Aaron Kotwal! He was high scorer for Shaw at the Columbus
State University Math Tournament.
Shaw Senior Kayla Whitaker received the 2007 Whitney Kees Drug Free Youth Award
on March 6, 2007, at the Columbus Trade Center.
The award is given annually to a senior in the MCSD who exemplifies this life
style. The initial announcement of this year's recipient was made at the Greater
Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce with the formal presentation at the Drug Free
You and Me Conference. Among her many accomplishments at Shaw, Kayla is
President of the Shaw High Chapter of R.A.D.D., an editor of The Silver Star,
a member of Beta Club, Quill and Scroll, and the Shaw Senior Council. She also
received honors for her photographic essays at the annual Georgia Scholastic
Press Association at UGA and is the current Ms. Shaw High School. We are proud
that Kayla is the recipient of the 2007 Whitney Kees' Award.
(Whitney Kees who was a senior at Shaw High School and would have graduated in
1994 was killed in September 1993 by a drunk driver
after a football game. Whitney was a shinning example of a student who was
involved in school activities and led a drug free life. The award was
created to highlight those students who also lead a drug free life, are involved
in school activities, and have influenced others in a positive manner.)
Congratulations to Peaches Parham for being selected as Shaw's Reader of the
Year! A celebration honoring all MCSD students who are the school, district, and
state winners of the 2007 Annual Reader of the Year Competition was held at
Columbus State University March 9.
Congratulations to
Shaw's math team who competed in the region literary meet at Harris County High
School Saturday, March 10.
Special honors go to Carlton Dawson, Shaw's new
region champion, who placed first in Boy's Solo and will compete again March 17
in Warner-Robbins. Congratulations also to our other students who placed in this
competition. Jenisse Wilson was third in Girl's Solo, and Desiree Figueroa,
Camerae Lang, and Jenisse Wilson placed third in Girls' Trio. Bryan Brown,
Carlton Dawson, Marcus Jenkins and Ernest Seldon placed fourth in Boys'
Quartet. Audra King placed fourth in Girl's Dramatic Interpretation, and Jill
Bradley placed fourth in Girl's Extemporaneous Speaking. Thanks to all the
students who worked so hard to make this day such a wonderful experience for
everyone.
Teacher Honors
Shaw physics teacher and Shaw Robotics Team sponsor, Ms. Patti Spenard's paper
entitled "Gender Issues: Short-Changes in the Science Curriculum" was presented
in the March 2007 Georgia Journal of Science issue in conjunction with
her presentation at the March 30-31, 2007, conference at Albany State University.
