ATHLETICS
Signings
On Thursday, May 15, six additional Shaw athletes signed letters of intent with
colleges. Ashley Leverett, a member of the
Lady Raiders' tennis team, signed with Central Alabama Community College.
Rearkus McCrory, a member of the boys'
basketball team, signed with South Georgia Technical College.
Juan Pickett, a member of the football team,
signed with University of West Georgia. Jarvis Pitts,
also a member of the football team, signed with Cahomma Community College.
Howie Shakelford, a member of the baseball
team, signed with Andrew College. Marcos Rivera,
a member of the boys' tennis team, signed with Abraham Baldwin College.
Congratulations Shaw athletes, you're Shawsome!
CLUBS
Chess Club
Congratulations to the winners of the Shaw Chess Club's Third Annual Spring
Mini-tournament held on May 8 in the Media Center! Bo
Love won First Place, with Justin Stewart
winning Second Place, and Corey Bentson,
Vincente Crawford, and
"Austin" Seunghwan Kim sharing Third Place.

FCCLA

Shaw Green Club
The Shaw Green Club won the WTVM and Rivertown Ford "Drive for Green
Contest!" On Monday, May 19, WTVM will film our club "live" at Shaw
for the 6 PM news. Club members, wear your Green Club shirts and be at
school AT 5:30 PM. Rivertown Ford will present our Club with a $1,000
check on live TV that evening. What a wonderful thing to happen to the Shaw
Green Club!
Shaw's Green Club was honored with the "Litter Prevention Award" at
the Keep
Columbus Beautiful Awards Ceremony on May 8 at the Columbus Trade Center. A
combined group of twenty-four students and teachers representing the Green Club
attended the ceremony; Luke Wagner, the club's president, accepted the award for

FINE ARTS
Drama
Shaw's spring production, "I Love the 80s," was performed Friday, May 9 and
Saturday, May 10 in the Kathy Tracy Auditorium. Bryan Brown wrote the original
musical production, and Daphne Smith choreographed it. It incorporated 80s pop
music and lots of dancing. Everyone who attended had a lot of fun watching our
many multi-talented Shaw students!
GRADUATION
Graduation will be Friday, May 23, at 9 PM at the Columbus Civic Center.
HONORS
Shaw High School junior Kelly Mejia was
chosen as one of the winners of a competition sponsored by the Girl Scouts of
Historic Georgia. The prize is a one-week stay at the Girl Scout camp. She wrote
an essay for the contest, "How Can We Help Preserve the Environment" along with
a full-color illustration. Kelly's work will be on display in an exhibit that
opens Thursday, May 15 at 4:30 PM at the South Columbus Branch Library. The
exhibit will run through Saturday, May 17. Congratulations, Kelly!
Journalism
Congratulations to the Silver Star staff on placing First in the
state in community service for the third year in a row and their merit rating at
the GSPA Awards Ceremony at the Macon Centreplex on May 2!
Social Studies
First Place winners of the Spring Social Studies Fair are
Todd Burke, ninth grade,
Casey Baucom, eleventh grade, and
Andrew Braman, eleventh grade. Great going,
Raiders!!
Congratulations to sophomore Gayla Jackson who won
First Place in the Law Day Essay Contest for the Muscogee County School
District! She, was honored on May 1 at a luncheon at the Trade Center.
Mrs. Lynda Kannady, Gayla's AP U.S. History
teacher, accompanied her to the luncheon. Gayla, we are very proud of you!!
HONORS' DAY
Honors' Day, the honoring of outstanding Shaw students by family and invited
guests, was held on Tuesday, May 13. Juniors and seniors were honored
during first block; freshmen and sophomores were honored during
second block.
OPEN HOUSE
Open House for incoming ninth graders is May 5 at 6PM. Come see why, "It's
great to be a Shaw Raider!"
