Philip Wheeler's
football jersey (#91) was retired in an student assembly in the Shaw
auditorium on May 11. While playing football at Shaw, he was a First-team
All-State Class AAAA pick by the Atlanta Journal_Constitution and an
honorable mention All-Region selection by Prep Star.
Philip
is a 2003 graduate of Shaw, helped his team to the state title as a
sophomore, played inside linebacker for Georgia Tech, was selected in the
Third Round of the NFL draft, and is presently a linebacker with the
Indianapolis Colts.
ATHLETICS
Boys' Track
Joseph Housel and
Jonathan Jones both qualified to compete at
the state championship May 7-9.

to the two athletes on the Shaw Boys' Track Team for being being selected to
the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's All-Bi-City Boys Track Team! Selected

Joseph Housel (800), who won the Region 2-AAA 800 meters title
with a 2:04:19, and Jonathan Jones
((triple jump) who jumped 45-1.75 at the Georgia Olympics! Great job

Track
A big congratulations goes out to
Coach Edgar Johnson and the Lady Raider track
team and field team. They finished in First Place at their track meet on Saturday, May 2, earning them
the title, Region Champs for seven consecutive years! The following ladies
will be competing at the state championship May 14-16 in Albany, Georgia:

finished Eighth in the state out of forty-five teams.

finished Eighth in the state in pole vault.

finished Third in both the shot put and the discus.
Charquisa Burnley
finished Eighth in the 300 meter hurdles and also in the 300 meter hurdles.
Torrenzia Lyles
finished Sixth in the 200 meter dash and earned the title as a State
Champion when she ran a time of 56.49 in the 400 meter dash. Great job
ladies!! You represented Shaw well!!

Signings
Six Shaw athletes signed their contracts for athletic scholarships on May
12. Those signing were
Khiry White
who signed to play Division I basketball with Alabama A&M.
Khiry
was a Ledger-Enquirer All-Bi-City first-team selection and was the
second leading scorer for the Raiders.
Maliek Daniels,
also a first team All-Bi-City selection, and
Deante
Caruthers,
the Raider's leading scorer in the 2008-2009 season will be basketball
teammates again at South Georgia Technical College. The Jets were 26-6 last
season and reached the third round of the National Junior College Athletic
Association.
Deante
was a second team All-Bi-City selection.
Joseph Housel,
not only a member of the Raider track team but also a member of the Raider
cross country team that took the Region Cross Country Championship this
year, will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design and be majoring
in journalism.
Brandi Oatts,
an All Region 2-AAA basketball selection as the leading scorer and rebounder
for the Lady Raider basketball team signed with Lurleen B. Wallace Community
College.
Misha Aldridge
who has collected All-Bi-City honors in multiple sports in her high school
career and is truly Miss Shaw High School signed with Birmingham Southern.

FINE ARTS
Art
Autumn Schurg,
Shaw senior and outstanding art student, presented a piece of her artwork,
entitled "Eva's Story," May 12, 2009, to the Shaw High School Media Center.
It will become a part of the growing collection of student artwork that
graces the walls of the Media Center.
Band
Shaw Spanish teacher,
Mrs. Dell McLendon
and the Wildwood Bluegrass band she is a member of performed for
Mr. George's Cobb's
guitar class and
Ms. Rachel Champ's
choral class to demonstrate the bluegrass style of music as a part of the
students' music appreciation class. Students were invited to play along and
DID! The students loved it!!

playing a fiddle.)
Drama
The spring production of the drama department was presented on May 15-16
in the Kathy Tracey Auditorium. This year's production, written by the
actors and directed by
Bryan Brown,
is called "The Walter Parker Show" and is a musical version of a daytime TV
talk show including parodies of famous commercials. The audience loved it!!

Spring Fling
The Shaw's "Sounds of Silver" band, art students, the Gospel Choir,
orchestra students, and guitar class students joined in a fantastic Spring
Fling on April 28 at 7 PM in the Kathy Tracey Auditorium and the lobby of

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
The Spanish language department's students at Shaw and the Eagle Ridge
Elementary School students celebrated Cinco de Mayo Tuesday, May 5, in the
Shaw auditorium performing dances, playing and singing Hispanic music, and
learning about different Spanish countries' culture. Eagle Ridge students
each received a handmade craft from
Mrs. Monica Livingston's
Spanish class

CTAE
At the third annual Teen Iron Chef Competition at Jordan High School, a
Shaw student has been on the winning team of competitors for the last two
years.

Shaw senior, was a member of the four member Care Bears team that won the

Fine Arts--Band
Three "Sound of Silver" Raider band members signed music/band scholarships
on May 8.
Corban Dickey,
received a $2500 renewable scholarship to Alabama State University in
Montgomery, Alabama, for
Marching Band where he plans to major in chemistry and later go on to
medical school to become a doctor, and later a neurosurgeon.
Corban
is a percussionist and has performed in the marching and concert bands at
Shaw High School. He has also participated in the CV Community All Star
Band.
Anthony Claiborne
received a $2000 renewable scholarship to Albany State University in Albany,
Georgia, for
instrumental ensembles, a $1000 one-time Albany State University Alumni,
Columbus Chapter scholarship, a $2000 renewable scholarship to Troy
University in Troy,
Alabama,
for instrumental ensembles, and a $4000 renewable scholarship to
Albany State University for the Wind ensembles. He plans to attend Albany
State University where he plans to major in music and enlist in the U.S.
Marine Corps to play for the Marines.
Anthony
is a saxophone player and has served as a captain and section leader. He has
also served as a student arranger for the marching band; he has also
participated in the CV Community All Star Band and is very active in the
music ministry at his church.
Jamel Lee
received an $8500 renewable scholarship to Jackson State University in
Jackson, Mississippi, for Academic Leadership, a partial renewable music
scholarship for marching band, a partial renewable music scholarship for
concert band, and acceptance in the School of Entrepreneurship financial
aide program. He plans to major in business and entrepreneurship as well as
attend the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School. He plans to own his own
restaurant business.
Jamel
is a
percussionist and has served the band as drum line co-captain, band vice
president and concert band section leader. He plays bass guitar for the Shaw
High School award winning Gospel Choir.
Jamel
has also participated in the CV Community All Star Band and serves in the
music ministry at his church.

GMR
Congratulations to the Silver Star staff on being named the
"Turnaround Staff of the Year," winning their fourth Community Service Award
in a row. Also, congratulations to
Courtney Marshall
for receiving a Superior rating for "Movie Review." These awards were made
at the Georgia Scholastic Press Association in Athens, Georgia, on Friday,
May 1.
Bryan Lindsey and
Ventrine Parham produced a video entitled "Red Cross--PSA" for
the MCSD Media Festival in April. It then went on to the State Media
Festival level and was judged on May 1. It qualified with a superior rating
to proceed to the international level! Wow!! Their video will be
judged this summer, and winners will be announced the end of October 2009.
Media Festival involves students' (kindergarten through the grade twelve)
activities which progress through three successive levels (building, system,
and state). Entries must be evaluated at each level and receive a superior
rating in order to proceed to the next level. We wish you the best! Go
Raiders!!

MEDIA CENTER HAPPENINGS
The Shaw Media Center hosted a book fair at Barnes and Noble,
Columbus Park Crossing, May 29-31, and featured
Marina Savashynskaya,
student artist at Shaw, in an art show at the book fair
with displays both in the windows and inside the store.
Ms.
Savashynskaya,
who was the winner of the Columbus Steeplechase Art Show this past fall, was
born in Minsk, Belarus, and migrated to the United States when she was
eleven years old. She did not begin to study art until she enrolled in
classes taught by Shaw art instructor,
Mrs.
Lynn Butler.
Today, her work, "Triumph" is included in the permanent collection of the
Columbus Museum and may be viewed in the Transitions Department at the
museum.
Ms. Savashynskaya
was present at the book fair to answer questions about her work.
During the book fair on Saturday, May 30, African-author, Cheris Hodges,
will be signing her novels of romance. Ms. Hodges, who is a native of South
Carolina, was once a reporter for the Covington News (Georgia). She
has published several novels.
