HAPPENINGS
On Thursday, November 8, Chris Crutcher, award-winning writer and one of the most popular writers of young adult fiction books, spoke in the Shaw Media Center with Shaw students who are members of the Shaw Readers' Club and with Shaw students who have been reading his books in their classes. Prior to Mr. Crutcher's visit, Readers' Club members met during their lunch period on Wednesday, October 31, and discussed the various Chris Crutcher books they had read for the club. Loaded with questions concerning his writing, Shaw students anxiously anticipated his arrival and thoroughly enjoyed !! Mr. Crutcher also spoke to area media specialists at 4:00 PM, and then to the community at 7:00 PM at the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road concerning his writing process and his experiences with censorship. We would like to thank The Friends of the Public Library for inviting Chris Crutcher to come to Columbus, GA!  Click here to see more photos of his visit with Shaw's students.

On November 30, Mr. Phil Linn, retired Shaw social studies teacher, and Mrs. Betty Nixdorf, retired MCSD educator, spoke to Ms. Ruth Caton's and Mrs. Brantley Ford's social studies classes. Mr. Linn introduced Mrs. Nixdorf to the classes and gave the background of the Philippines involvement in World War II. Mrs. Nixdorf recounted her experiences as a teenager in an internment camp in the Philippines during World War II.

HONORS
Congratulations to senior Antrovious "Trovey" Ferguson whose team won the Second Annual Jordan High School Culinary Arts Program's Student Iron Chef competition on Monday, November 19, and also was the Head Executive Chef for his team. Students form MCSD high schools made up four teams. His Chipotle Hot Wings were a hit with the judges, and the recipe was even requested by one of the judges. The Ledger-Enquirer quoted Trovey as saying, "I'm honored. I love this class. It's so helpful." The Enquirer added that "it'll be especially helpful when he heads for Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta in the fall." Trovey is a student in the Culinary Arts Program at Jordan under the direction of Mr. Austin Scott, husband of our own Mrs. Kristine Scott, and dreams of owning his own restaurant in Columbus somewhere along the Chattahoochee River.  Trovey is also an offensive and defensive linebacker on the mighty Raider football team.  One day Trovey will have his own cooking program on the Food Network channel! We can then say, "We knew him when...." We wish you the best Trovey!!
