During the 2006 -- 2007 school year, Shaw High School and the Columbus Public Library joined in a partnership to pilot a book club for teens. Under the direction of Ms. Bridjin Boddie of the Teen Department of the library, and Shaw Media Specialists Mrs. Sonya Boyd and Mrs. Rosie McDuffie, Shaw students are reading books by Young Adult authors. Shaw students in all grade levels are invited to participate in the book club. Discussions are held during the lunch periods. Students bring their lunches, and the media staff provide beverages and side dishes. The club started off the 2007-- 2008 school year by reading books by Chris Crutcher, award-winning and popular writer of young adult fiction books, who would later visit and speak personally with Shaw students on November 8, 2007. Chris Crutcher's autobiography and many of his novels were discussed on October 31 by the book club members during their lunch period.
