ATHLETICS
Baseball
On Thursday, September 10, there will be a Baseball Booster Club meeting in room 200 at 6:30 PM. It is important that all players and parents attend; there will be important information given out for the coming year.

Volleyball
On September 29, the Lady Raider Volleyball team participated in their first Play for the Cure volleyball matches. They played against Kendrick and Harris County High School here in the Shaw gym. Every team member, official, coach and even the ball will be wearing pink to symbolize the play for breast cancer; all proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen fund. Click here to see pics from the games. If you wish, you can also make an online donation at http://www.komen.org.

FACULTY HONORS
Congratulations to
Dr. Michael R. Forte for being awarded his Doctorate in Educational Leadership on August 26!  Dr. Forte has been an Assistant Principal at Shaw since 2005. Before coming to Shaw he had a career in law enforcement as a correctional officer and a police officer, and also taught social studies, coached, and earned his gifted education certification/endorsement. We, Shaw Raiders, are proud of your accomplishments!

Have you ever heard of a student teacher providing lunch for teachers? That's just another reason why "It's great to be a Shaw Raider!"  Mr. Patavious Sorrell, student teacher for Mr. Carloes Hardy this semester, and Mr. Sorrell's fraternity brother Mr. Keith Cooper, who is also a deputy sheriff for Muscogee County, chose Shaw to be their recipient of a delicious meal (lasagna--homemade at that!) during teachers' lunch periods on September 29 through their chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, INC. Thank you for adding another reason for loving to work at Shaw!  (Pictured l to r: Mr. Nathan Cheatham, Mrs. Judy King, Mr. Keith Cooper, Mr. Patavious Sorrell--dressed in black, and Mr. Carloes Hardy.)

GRADUATION WRITING TEST
The graduation writing test will be September 30, 2009. There will be an intense and thorough writing review beginning September 21-25 immediately after school in room 228. If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity, sign up in room 228 with
Mrs. Fuerte.

HAPPENINGS AROUND SHAW
At Shaw High School, technology is a Number 1 priority in preparing our students for the future!  Four mobile labs have provided Shaw with the ability to integrate more technology into the classroom curriculum. In the pictures below, Ms. Monica Livingston and some of her students can be seen in their Spanish class on a recent visit to the Shaw Media Center recording their own voices in narrating a PowerPoint presentation of "All About Me," or in Spanish, "Todo Acerca de Mi."

HONORS
Gayla Jackson was named as MCSD student representative as our 2009-2010 United States Senate Youth Program nominee. Congratulations, Gayla for having the highest test score against the other high schools!

Rebecca Pearson is our Youth of the Month for the Columbus Exchange Club. Rebecca, congratulations!

PARENTS
We hope to see you at Kinnett Stadium Friday, September 4, at 7 PM for our first home game of the new season for football. Please remember that coolers, outside food items, pets, and umbrellas may not be taken into Kinnett Stadium. Please use ponchos for rain protection when needed.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
Seven professors from our Partners in Education, University of Phoenix, came to Shaw to interview 130 seniors over a two-day period this month. This is their fourth evolution of them doing this. University of Phoenix will be back in the spring to interview the rest of the seniors. Mr. E.W. Newlin is the coordinator on the University's end. Shaw won PIE Award due in large  part to the efforts put forth by the interviewing committee. Thank you University of Phoenix!!

PTSA
PTSA will sponsor Freshman Night on October 13 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. A $50 drawing for a Visa card will be held and refreshments will be served. Parents and students come support your school and perhaps leave with with that $50!
