Services

For proper maintenance and enhancement of the school environment, Shaw has the following services for its students and faculty:

 | Counseling and Advisement | Media Center | Phones | Clubs | Student ID Badges |
| Lockers and Book Bags | Emergency Procedures |

Counseling and Advisement

The efforts of the Guidance Department are directed toward encouraging Shaw students to develop self-knowledge and self-discipline and to define and attain their educational and vocational goals to the highest degree consistent with their abilities.

Shaw's multifaceted approach to advisement with counselors, advisors and classroom teachers providing information and guidance, play an important role in the total educational process.  Parents, students and faculty are invited to make use of this service.  The Guidance Office is open from 7:15 AM until 3:00 PM.

Media Center

The Media Center plays a strategic role in the instructional program of Shaw High School.  The center contains a wealth of materials and services, including books, videotapes, on-line capabilities, and other media for the use of students and faculty.  The Media Center is open from 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM and is available to students during the day with a pass from their respective teachers.

Phones

Office phones are for school business and not for student use until after 3:00 PM each school day. Students who become ill should report to the clinic, and a parent will be contacted.  Parents should not expect school secretaries to deliver phone messages to students in situations other than emergencies.  Students will be called to the office at the end of the school day to deliver messages from parents.

Clubs
A comprehensive list of clubs and activities is available from Advisors or click here.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities offered by clubs and activities for community service, school service, and self improvement.

Student ID Badges
Every Shaw High School student will be issued a school ID.  These are to be carried at all times on campus and are required for school computer use, book checkout, and lunch.

Lockers and Book Bags
Lockers are provided for student use for a rental fee of $7.00.  When lockers are left open or combinations shared, three (3) undesirable consequences might occur:  (1) Items are stolen, (2) Locker doors are bent or otherwise vandalized, or (3) students become responsible for contraband left in their lockers by others.

School administrators have the legal right and obligation to insure enforcement of school policies and have the right to search a student, his locker, and other personal effects.

Students are not permitted to share lockers, so purchase your own early.  The sharing of lockers will result in two (2) days ISSP for the first (1st) offense and one (1) day of MES for the second (2nd) offense.

Book bags are not allowed during the school day. Wearing of book bags will mean one (1) day of MES or two (2) days of ISSP.

Emergency Procedures
Fire drills and tornado drills are mandated by law.  Plans for Emergency Preparedness are updated yearly, kept on file in the main office, posted on the bulletin board in the office, listed as part of the SHS Teachers' Handbook, and are covered in detail in faculty meetings.  Teachers should remind students of procedures for drills and emergencies during the first several days of school and throughout the school year.  Fire drills are signaled by a special alarm horn that continues to sound for an extended period of time.  Students are to move quickly and silently, in single file, to the exit designated for the class to which they are assigned.  Fire drill routes are posted prominently in every classroom.

The signal for a tornado drill is three (3) long tones sounded over the PA system.  Students are to remain calm and quiet, and follow the instructions posted in each classroom and given verbally by the teacher.

A long, continuous tone sounded over the PA system is the signal for teachers to make sure students are in class, seated, and to lock the doors to their respective classrooms.  Under no circumstances are students to be allowed to leave the room once this signal is sounded, and are not to be released to their next class or to go home until specified by an administrator.  Further information or instructions will be provided as quickly as possible by runner, radio, or over the PA system.
