Teacher of the Month
2005-2006

May
Lynn Butler is our May Teacher of the Month!  Mrs. Butler was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, and graduated from Auburn University with an art degree.  She has taught art for seventeen years -- one year in elementary school; one year in middle school; and the rest in high school.  She was at Kendrick High for ten years and has been at Shaw for five years -- AND she plans on staying at Shaw!  Before teaching, Mrs. Butler worked as a fashion illustrator for a local department store in its advertising department, as the display manager at a local department store and has done free lance art for Lang Greeting Cards.  She has been married for twenty-three years, has one daughter who will graduate from high school this year, and owns five dogs.  Her hobbies include, of course, painting and drawing portraits.  She has a tremendous ability to motivate and draw talent from her art students. Mrs. Butler states, "I love art because I have amazing students with tremendous talent."  Congratulations Mrs. Butler!  Click here to see some of her students' artwork.

April
Congratulations to Mrs. Kristine Scott, Shaw's April Teacher of the Month!  A 1996 graduate of Columbus State University majoring in biology, Mrs. Scott is currently finishing her Master's degree in Environmental Science.  During her nine year tenure at Shaw, she has been the junior class sponsor, science department chair, and official scorekeeper for Shaw's varsity baseball team.  She has also raised money for the American Diabetes Association by running in and completing both the London Marathon in 1999 and the Kona marathon in 2000.  Her teaching responsibilities have included biology, applied biology/chemistry, chemistry, physical science, botany, and AP environmental science where she has strive to "teach in a manner that positively affects the learning and lives of students."  Mrs. Scott is yet another reason why "its' GREAT to be a Shaw Raider!"

March
Lynda Kannady does it all:  In her role as Social Studies Teacher, she teaches a full slate of sophomores US History classes.  During first semester, she added another prep to her schedule by stepping into the shoes of Kathy Tracy and teaching the World History Honors class with Ruth Caton.  As junior class sponsor, she has the job of collecting junior dues, and along with Kris Scott is busy planning for the Junior-Senior Prom.  She has played an active role in Shaw High's Learn and Serve Grant Program, and is advising Nila Burt as Nila takes over head Learn and Serve Coordinator from Ginger Starling.  Along with Angie Eldridge, she coordinated the Social Studies Fair for Shaw.  Currently, she is completing her internship for her designation as Teacher Support Specialist through CSU.  Finally, every year she assists Mrs. McIlrath in escorting and chaperoning Shaw chorus students to the All-state Chorus Competition in Savannah, which this year is in March.  Congratulations Mrs. Kannady for a job well done!

February
Mrs. Libby Clay is our February Teacher of the Month!  Mrs. Clay is one of our younger teachers on staff here at Shaw.  This is just her fifth year at Shaw, yet she has accomplished so much.  As a first year teacher she received recognition as Muscogee County School District's New Teacher Runner Up.  The co-op program is thriving under her direction, and she also created the now annual Raider Pride Pageant.  Her dedication to DECA has also paid off.  At DECA's regional competition this year, Shaw's team came in first place.  They are now preparing to compete at the state level.  Not only does she sponsor DECA, but she is the lead advisor for Shaw's National Honor Society.  Congratulations Mrs. Clay!

January
Congratulations to Ms. Angie Eldridge, Shaw's January Teacher of the Month!  A 1994 graduate of the University of Georgia majoring in secondary social sciences, Ms. Eldridge came to Shaw from the business sector.  During her tenure here she has earned her Masters degree from Columbus State University, participated in the Teacher Support Mentor Training program, served as co-chair  of Shaw's Social Studies Fair, and is the ninth grade class sponsor.  Her teaching responsibilities have included Citizenship, Skills, Honors U.S. History, and Economics where she has strived to meet all learning styles and has worked selflessly after school hours to help students where needed.  Additionally, Ms. Eldridge while living in Columbus during her sophomore year of high school attended Shaw as a student.  Ms. Eldridge is truly a picture of why "it's GREAT to be Shaw Raider!"

December
Dr. Pat Boling is a superior mathematics teacher.  She possesses the most important characteristics that all teachers should have:  enthusiasm and diligence.  She is selfless when it comes to helping students learn mathematics.  You can see Dr. Boling working with students early each morning, as well as late in the afternoon.  Dr. Boling is also the Mathematics Department Chair and a sponsor of Shaw's Math Team.  Congratulations, Dr. Boling for being Shaw High School's December Teacher of the Month!

November
It was a fortunate day when Kay Agnew came to Shaw in the fall of 2003.  Although she taught in Muscogee County in the 1970s, it was at Pacelli High School where she forged a reputation as master teacher, being named the Sara Spano Page One Teacher of the Year in 1990 by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.  Mrs. Agnew also gained a reputation as a successful cross country coach, an activity which she has pursued at Shaw High School.  Here, at the home of the Raiders, she is well known as a force behind the Georgia Learn and Serve Program.  At Shaw where she is a member of the English Department, she teaches seniors and serves as an encouragement to these young adults, even as she leads them through the rigors of English literature and speaking and writing skills.  Mrs. Agnew is Shaw's Teacher of the Month for November.  Congratulations to Shaw's own Mrs. Kay Agnew.

October
Elaine Morgan's contributions to Shaw High School are enumerable.  Mrs. Morgan is a superior mathematics teacher.  She has the expertise to teach low-level as well as advanced mathematics courses.  Her credentials include AP-Calculus certification, Mentor Teacher certification and TI 83/84 graphing calculator training.  She is also a Senior Class sponsor, Management Team treasurer, and the basketball cheerleading coach.  She volunteers to assist with athletic events which sometimes include selling tickets for a game, organizing the tailgate party, and on the other extreme she bakes cookies for the team to take on a trip to the game.  She is a superior mathematics teacher and an outstanding representative of Shaw High School.  Congratulations Mrs. Morgan for being our Teacher of the Month!

September
Major DalPonte is beginning his second year as a Shaw Raider.  His enthusiasm, high expectations, and positive work ethic have energized teachers and students alike.  The JROTC program and Drill Teams have a sense of renewed focus and performance standards that quickly placed them among the elite in our school district.  Major D has made a commitment to the total school program, and has, in a short period of time, become recognized as an outstanding teacher dedicatee to the education of our students.  Congratulations Major DalPonte, on your selection as the Shaw Raider Teacher of the Month.
